Advice on handling my Russian Dwarf?
I've never had a dwarf, only Syrians so I feel abit nervous about handling her and would just like a little advice.
I've been putting my hand flat on her cage floor with fingers in and shes super friendly and doesn't seem afraid at all. She either comes up to my hand to sniff or she's just carrying on with her usual business around the cage whilst my hand is still there. She seems quite bold and the complete opposite to my Syrian who jumps at the slightest thing. Making slow progress with my Syrian but I feel ok with him as Ive had Syrians before.
Anyway, how's best to go about starting to handle my Dwarf? It's a good sign that she doesn't mind my hand in the cage do you think?
I'm desperate to stroke her but I don't want to ruin things as she seems so confident at the moment x

Re: Advice on handling my Russian Dwarf?
In my experience, Russians are very similar to Syrians as far as taming goes. They are more likely to test-nibble, but a little movement usually stops that. The main difference, other than size, is that Russians can be cage-aggressive, which means a cup or tube to get them out may be required (but then they're perfectly fine outside the cage).
You could try offering a piece of food, and while she's eating that, gently stroke her back to let her get used to it.

Re: Advice on handling my Russian Dwarf?
Thanks Jeir, there are definitely no signs of cage aggression yet, she seems completely fine with my hand being there but perhaps it's because she's just a baby.
Am I doing the wrong thing by putting my hand in her cage and resting it on the cage floor? I was wanting to get her used to my scent and she seems fine with it but don't want to be starting off on the wrong foot x

Re: Advice on handling my Russian Dwarf?
I always begin like that just resting my hand in the cage with a seed or other small treat on it & they usually get used to it very quickly & will soon be climbing on your hand.

Re: Advice on handling my Russian Dwarf?
In my experience is best to let climb into a cup or tube as they can be territorial (cage aggressive. They do seem to be a lot more bold than syrians and are more likely to jump off the edge of things. To tame my dwarf I would take her to the bathtub or the landing of my stairs as it as closed in and I sat on the stairs. They are a lot faster so bathtub taming was the safest bet for me (before moving to the stairs since she likes the carpet). You could throw in a blanket in the tub though.

Re: Advice on handling my Russian Dwarf?
I've only had one who was territorial in her cage, all the others have been fine with my hand in the cage so I don't think there's any need to assume that most will be.
