Default Just wanting advise on choosing between syrians and russian dwarfs please

I've only ever had Syrians when I was younger but all seemed so jumpy and hard to tame.
Does anyone find that Russians are less jumpy?
I have young children so I'm getting one for myself really, I won't allow them to handle the hamster but would be nice for them to watch them.
Do Russians tend to be awake more during the day? Xx

I personally think Syrians are easier to tame All hamsters can be jumpy. A lot depends on a) their personality b) their experiences prior to you getting them (some have been handled roughly for example) and c) a bit of time and patience with inital taming - and you'd get a lot of help with that on here.

I think partly a Syrian is easier to tame purely due to them being a bit larger and easier to handle generally. Some dwarf hamster owners may disagree!

Also with children around they probably will want to hold the hamster sometimes and Syrians are a bit easier I reckon - and less likely to be injured by the child accidentally. I had to constantly supervise our 6 year old when we had our last syrian - they tend to try and hang on to them when they move.

What you could do possibly is get a hamster from a rescue. They will know which of the hamsters is placid and/or hand tame already, whether it's a syrian or a dwarf

Baby hamsters are always very zippy!

I've never had a Syrian so I can't actually compare from experience but I have found Russians very easy to tame, they don't tend to be jumpy in my experience, the more nervous ones may hide away a bit to begin with & need a little patience to tame but those seem to be the exceptions.
Their small size may make handling a little harder to begin with & they are quite fast but as long as you stick to a safe area like a playpen for out of cage taming it's quite easy to get them used to hands & handling, in the cage I haven't found them to be jumpy really, some can be a bit cage territorial (I've only had one female & she was & I think it may be a bit more of a female trait) but are fine once out of the cage.

Thanks so much for replies
I may even get one of each at some point... would their cages be ok near to each other? Will the scent of the other cause issues? Xx

Lots of people keep more than one ham in the same room with no problems at all, some people even stack cages & the hams seem to be fine, I keep mine at least a few feet apart though & they barely seem to take notice of each other apart from a bit of attention seeking behaviour when they hear me interacting with another one.

The others gave great advice! I have personally never owned a Syrian but I’ve heard that they are good starter ham. Syrians tend to be slower and easier to tame, this all depends on personality though. Dwarves tend to be much speeder. This all depends on personality though and I’m exited to meet your future ham!

Russian’s I find easier mostly because its easier to find suitable toys and they’re more easily entertained than Syrians in my experiance. The only downsides to Russian’s is they are more likely to develop cage agression and if you’re buying a hybrid, the increased chance of diabetes and other health problems.

I've never had a dwarf as Hamper is my first hamster but to be honest he was so easy to tame I didn't even know if he was ever untame! But that's probably because he's a ladies ham. (We used to keep our two Syrans together, Hamper and my brother's hamster Hammy and they never fought until they mated. Then we needed some separation.) Either way dwarves may be better or not but I do recommend getting both cause that means MORE CUTENESS OVERLOAD!!!

Mother of the world's smartest Syrian, Hamper! Well, maybe not the world's smartest but he's the smartest hamster I've ever seen! I'm also the aunt of the deadly vampire Ruby! He's not actually deadly or vampiric but we like to pretend

Thanks again all. I've decided to get both! Have my eye on a male Syrian and a female Russian dwarf.
Probably a stupid question but will it matter that they are different sexes? Just wondering if they will smell each other from their cages and it cause problems or wont that matter as they are different species? Xx

Itnwont matter at all that the two species are different genders.

I have a dwarf hybrid (pets at home adoption) and a roborovski who live next to each other in barred cages who do ot seem at all bothered by each other.

I have even kept male and female syrians in the same room with some interest and cute noises but no problems.
