Update on Sweet Daernerys ☺️
My sweet, sweet girl has finally let me hold her after almost a YEAR of bonding.
She came to me as a very, deeply traumatised rescue.
Covered in blood and scared of any human contact.
It’s been a long, sad journey. Full of trial, error and set backs but this week has been huge for us.
Last Thursday, she finally felt able to put her front paws onto my hand to reach the food in my palm.
Days later she tentatively walked into my hand as a means of getting from a cube to her hut.
At the weekend we had the biggest breakthrough when she was investigating my jumper sleeve, she tried to climb up it, so I covered my hand with my sleeve and she climbed into my hand.
The next day we did the same, and this time she climbed up my arm so I held her to my chest which she sniffed around,
Then she tried to jump from me to her cage! Luckily I caught her, and set her down.
Then today I offered her my hand, but she didn’t want to climb onto it naked. So I grabbed a small towel and covered my hand with that, and she climbed up.
I bought her to my chest and we had a small walk to the living took where she explored me, the chair and my Boyfriend too, he was very touched that she wanted to climb on him ☺️
After a few minutes she was looking a little overwhelmed so we had a slow walk back to her cage.
It feels so good to see her confidence grow.
It’s taken a long time and I’ll admit I did wonder if she would ever feel comftable enough to be handled.
It was enough for me when she let her feed her mealworms without running away, or even when she stopped hiding when I entered the room.
But this progress both breaks my heart and warms it.
She’s been through unspeakable trauma at the hands of humans and has been able to put that behind her and learn to trust again.
Honestly I could cry I’m so proud of her.
I hope you all are too ☺️☺️

That’s wonderful news! It really is so touching to hear how far some hamsters can progress. It’s quite amazing that she’s able to come back from such horrible abuse, and trust you like that. I know some of my rodent rescues have never reached that level of comfort, even after years of rehabilitation and good treatment. Good luck with the continuation of her taming. Patience and persistence is key!

This is so sweet! I’m so glad you took her from that awful situation she was in before you got her. It’s must have been so touching for you to climb on your hand! This made me so happy and put a huge smile on my face! Good luck with the rest of taming!
