Default Boy or girl

I'm collecting a baby Syrian boy in a few weeks from a breeder, I've read that boys are calmer than girls so opted for a boy, is this true?

I've heard boys seem to be more mellow and less destructive, even happier with an 80 by 50 cm cage. The difference was most notable in two sort of rescues I've had. Both of them were over a year old when I got them. One was a boy, the other a girl. In this case it turned out to be true. They were kept in cages of about 55 cm with nothing more thena house, a wheel and food and water.

The boy was very mellow, relaxed and likes to taking it easy. He didn't barchew in his new cage. (A Criceti 15) He just liked walking around, gather food and performed normal hamster behaviours. He also liked lap time and just taking things slowly.

The girl? Nope, her new 80 by 50 cm cage turned out to be to tiny for her. She loves racing in the playpen and got a 100 cm cage. That made her more relaxed but still, bar chewing and climbing, really wanted to get out. After some play time all was well.

So I guess in this case it's true. But every hamster is an individual. Guess it just depends on a lot of factors.

Congrats on giving a male Syrian his loving, forever home with you. I hope that the two of you create a wonderful bond with one another and have years of great fun together. From most of my personal experience and what I witnessed with many other peoples' hams, males tend to be more mellow whereas females often are much more active and stubborn. This isn't always the case though as each individual hamster's personality is totally different and there are some hams that exhibit the activity and stubbornness tendencies of their opposite gender counterparts. For example, I had a beloved male hamster Lancelot that was as energetic and stubborn as my most adventuresome female ham Eros so just because a hamster happens to be a certain gender, it does not necessarily mean that they are going to act a certain way. Have fun and best of luck. I look forward to meeting your little one when he is settled in more.

I've had both male and female Chinese at the same time so have been able to make some kind of comparison and on a whole the girls are more lively, love to be busy doing things whereas the boys tended to prefer to be chilling out in a nice comfy spot. I've got a couple of lads that are the extreme of this and to a degree I think that was inherited (their father is also lazy) but on the other hand I used to have one girl who was very calm and laid back but yet her son was an energetic boy.

From what I have heard, Syrians are pretty much the same but there will always be individual quirks and personalities to every hamster.

In my experience syrian males are generally more laid back and the females more lively, a lot more lively!

That's reassuring I think I've made the right choice, I can't wait to go and pick him.

We have had both Males and Females, the most laid back was Pip our female who was a complete Diva.
Forrest our first Hammy was a male and spent three days exploring inside the walls and floors of our house when he escaped, he would steer his ball around objects and worked out how to open his ball by ramming it into the wall until it was taped up, then he would wedge the ball some where and undo the lid from the inside....!
Ghost a current incumbent is a mix of the two, when he is out of his cage he is a runner and climber, he scoots up the stairs like a pro..!
