Default Your thoughts on silent spinners?

So I purchased a 6.5" silent spinner for my dwarf hybrid and I feel really disappointed tbh. Poor thing flies off after running for a few seconds. She kept doing it and she flew off pretty bad one of the times so I had to remove it as I'm worried she will really hurt herself. I bought her a flying saucer type wheel instead and she seems so much happier and doesn't fly off.

Is this a common thing for these wheels? Or is my hamster just running too fast? Thoughts and experience please

I am not a fan of silent spinners. They’re quite a poor quality wheel tbh. They are known to jam up and fall apart- not a very good thing for a small hamster who requires lots of exercise! I find that hamsters tend to fly off more when they’re on wheels that are too small. I personally recommend a wheel such as the silent runner/wodent wheel/trixie. These three are all much higher quality than the silent spinner.

The saucer wheel should be sufficient for a short time, but hamsters really should have a standard wheel to run on. I’ll leave a few links to high quality wheels below

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00...5tL&ref=plSrch

The UK forum members may have better sites and resources to purchase these wheels from. Best wishes!

I have a trixie wheel that I lent to my sister for now. It's not silent to me. It rattles a lot while the hamster is running. How would I make it silent? Would some Veg oil work?

Vegetable oil could work well to combat a louder wheel. In my experience though, the only truly silent wheel is the silent runner

A lot of hams will fly out of the open wheels at first but tend to stop doing it with practise when they learn to brake! If you can make sure there's nothing hard to fall on when she comes out it might be ok to try it for a bit longer.
It seems to be sheer luck with the Trixie wheels whether you get a noisy one or a quiet one, some are almost silent others really noisy & there isn't really anything you can do about the noisy ones, veg oil on works for some squeaky wheels, it won't help with the rattling noise.
The silent runner wheels are expensive but worth the investment if you can afford it, totally silent & really well made, easy to clean too.

I’ve got on ok with silent spinners for my dwarf hams. I’ve tried both the original silent spinner (I think maybe kaytee or superpet. Something like that) and the pets at home one. I did bin my original one a while ago as the back plate had cracked but it had been very well used by my old robo Hector who used to run extremely fast in it. He flew off of nearly every wheel he tried (including the saucer I got as well) the first few times he tried them while he figured out how to steer them. After that he was fine. I just made sure there’s was nothing hard in his “landing zone”.

dwarfs especially are very active, and if they're like my boy, they're flying off willfully. my little doofus very much has a "jump off a moving swing" attitude about life, but he's perfectly ok! it's just how he is because he is SO high energy. i have 2 silent spinners, one for my robo and one for my teddy, and i love them.

It sounds like you have a silent spinner that actually spins! These days they are known for being too stiff to run on. If she's happier with the flying saucer then that should be fine for a dwarf hamster. For a Syrian an upright wheel is best as the main wheel. The 6.5" silent spinner is very small as well - and maybe not quite big enough for an adult dwarf hamster so she would enjoy something easier to run in more. If you have space you could have an upright wheel and the flying saucer as she would probably enjoy both. The 9" silent runner is very good - but not cheap. It is silent though. The 8" wodent wheel would be a good option as well - it has small holes on the front so she can't jump out Meanwhile flying saucer sounds fine if it's big enough (not the really small one - 6.5 to 7" needed).

Pet planet sell the junior 8" wodent wheel. The photo shows the 11" one which larger wheels but if you look at the smaller photos underneath the 8" one is the photo on the far right. Not classed as a "silent" wheel but mine was virtually silent.

This is the 9" silent runner - it spins very easily but she wouldn't be able to go too fast. Dwarf hammies seem to really enjoy it.

Silent Runner 9 Inch

The silent spinner you have isn't cheap so if you've only just bought it you could maybe try asking for a refund and put the money towards the 8" or 9" wheel.
