Thank you.

He’s definitely inquisitive! I’ve put him a couple of treats in and a bit of apple, which he seems to have enjoyed.

Can I ask a question though? He’s been on the wheel most of the time since I got him (about 7 hours!). He does get off periodically to explore but he hasn’t been asleep. Is this normal for baby hams?

Also, how long should I leave him to settle in? I really don’t want to stress him out.

They often get a bit crazy with the wheel to begin with so I wouldn't worry too much he should settle down a bit soon enough.
I find the time they need to settle before interacting with them varies with every ham so just let him guide you, I always begin by just talking to them a lot then when they seem ready offer a treat, just keep your hand still & see if he'll come to you.

Thank you. Sorry for all the questions again. The support on here is invaluable!

I can’t find him this morning, but the wooden house is tilted so I’m going to assume he’s tucked himself in behind all the bedding in there! I’m not surprised he needs a rest after yesterday!

Hello again!

Well baby Bernie ran on the wheel for ages last night again, but this morning I couldn’t see him anywhere. I left him for most of the morning but then started worrying that he’d somehow got out or was hurt. I moved things and he was still nowhere to be seen. Finally found him wedged undeneath the wooden platform and the bottom of some steps! He was okay but very sleepy so I quickly put it back down again. There’s about 4 inches of substrate so he must’ve burrowed his way under. He’s taken some carrot in with him this afternoon.

Is it okay for him to be sleeping underneath things? He has a large wooden house and plenty of paper bedding but he doesn’t seem interested in any of them! He just wants to curl up in the wood shaving substrate so that he’s well hidden.

Sorry - questions again! - I just don’t want to stress him out!

Yes it’s quite normal for them to bury and sleep. In his case it’s that he’s still settling in I think and hasn’t properly established a nest yet. Give him time to move in, they usually do but the amount of time it takes varies. As long as nothing can potentially squash him when he digs down (can’t tell from your post if that’s the case) then there is nothing to worry about.

Thanks for responding.

No, he’s not squashed. The plank has two stumps on it to hold it up. It’s just that the substrate is deep enough to cover the legs so it’s like it’s flat on the surface if you see what I mean! Hence me not being able to find him.

He was up and about again last night but is still terrified of my hand in the cage. I also haven’t seen him touch the water bottle at all, although he did have a bit of cucumber last night.

I will try to stop worrying about everything and just leave him to his own devices over the weekend! Hopefully by next week he’ll start letting me give him some treats and lose his nerves a bit. He’s only a baby after all I guess!

Thanks again. X

Ah that’s fine then. Might be better to start with hands outside the cage eg in a playpen, that tends to go down a lot better with them at first. Either way I’m sure he’ll be fine

Good idea. I’m still leaving him to settle in at the moment though because he’s so jumpy.

I have a playpen so I’ll see how he is tonight when he gets up and maybe take him out and put him in there in a day or two. I’ve been watching taming videos as my first hamster never really became tame and hated being handled in any way so I’d really like this time to be different. That’s when he stops digging a bunker to hide in that is!

Hey, me again sorry.

So baby B is coming out every evening and running on the wheel exploring and stuff, but jumps out of his skin whenever I even approach the tank! I just walked past and he squealed a bit and fell off the wheel!

I’ve tried offering him treats but he’ll only have them when I’m completely out of the way. Should I attempt to get him out in a cup or something to go into the playpen for a bit or will that stress him further?

I don’t want to miss the chance to tame him and it’s worrying me.
