Default Have I made the right decision?

I recently bought the large Living world Eco Green Habitat from Zooplus (118.5cm by 78.5cm). I am going to be plastikoting the bottom wooden floor and maybe the corners if I have enough of it. The cage shall be housing a Syrian and am unsure of its gender. I'm asking because I recently saw a thread where lots of people labelled lots of cons about this cage. Have I just wasted my money?

No. If you look at the thread carefully they are mostly pros and queries about "cons". There aren't any cons really - no cage is perfect and they all need some kind of tweaking. Don't worry about it, it's a great cage. You will need to mesh the lid though.

If you don't have enough plastikote to completely do the corners, it should be fine if you do them up to about 20cm - above that there won't be any substrate up against the corners or any pee above that

I would still put something else on the base, even if you've plastikoted it. Eg sheets of correx. Which is also wipe clean and easily replaced - adds another layer of protection.

Hi Serendipity7000, thanks for the tips I was just wondering if there's anything else I can use other than sheets of correx?

They do sell liners but I don't think they're waterproof - they seem to be intended as a means of easy cleaning - ie lift all the bedding out with the liner. I've not heard of other options people use.

I guess you could put hemp mat on the base if you're plastikoting it - it would help prevent any liquid soaking through and safe if chewed.

Worth a suggestion for short term but add kitchen rolls beneath the substrate? This should help to add to another barrier and should bother your hammy until you find something more suitable but Ive never heard of correx so I'm not much help for that x

Its a great cage, I was more just asking if there are any cons before I spend such a large amount on one cage. It seems the only con is that the lid may need meshing and the usual wooden cage ‘risks’ of chewing and urine stains (both unlikely with the size tbh). I saw a thread on the German forum where they used metal edging over the wooden cprners to prevent chewing which seems like a good and cheap option if you get a female Syrian, I believe they attached it with aquarium silicone?

Haha - female syrians are classed as wood devourers Some are anyway - some are much less voracious.

Yes a few weeks ago I gave my hamster a DIY toy out of toilet roll tubes and lolly sticks and she destroyed it overnight!

I wouldn't put correx in the base of a cage, it's a very soft corrugated plastic so easy to get teeth into & chew to bits in no time & could be a problem if any got ingested.
Most hams don't pee on the base of the cage if the substrate is deep anyway so a coat of plastikote should be all the safe guarding you need for that.
