Post What don't they tell you?

I'm so, so, so excited to get my first hamster soon! I've been researching a TON. (AKA, 18 page powerpoint) and I keep seeing the same facts. I was wondering if there were any facts that experienced hamster owners would share that a lot of articles might not bring up.

Thanks in advance!

It depends. What species are you considering getting?

There is no such thing as one thing being suitable for all hamsters and a lot will depend on your hamster's personality... from suitable caging options, to taming methods, to the kinds of toys they like to play with.

That some hamsters aren’t going to be super cuddly pets. These small rodents can be tamed, but many will not fully tame down. I think it’s important for guides to note this so peoole aren’t left feeling hopeless and frustrated, and hamsters aren’t re-homed for being “aggressive”

Aside from that- you’re also going to have to be careful as to where you’re getting your information from. Many sources are biased or rely too heavily on anecdotal evidence rather than science. Anybody can make a guide, but not everybody understands the true needs of a hamster. I recommend searching all through these forums, and reading a wide variety of guides to get a better idea. Best wishes

Slow down. Taming, handling and general interaction will happen at the hamster's pace, not yours. So for some it can take days for them to become friendly with you, others can take weeks or months, if at all. Forcing it, like grabbing them when they're not ready to be handled, will only stress them out and could result in a bitten finger or three. It could also set back the taming process.
