Default I'm adopting a new friend tomorrow!

I haven't owned a hamster since I lost Aurora back in January. Honestly thought I was done owning hamsters. In the last 14 months, I've lost nine pets and I was kind of swearing off pets altogether.

Then I checked Zooplus' hamster section. Y'know, as you do when you don't currently own a hamster nor have any intentions of getting one. Call it curiosity.

Next, I looked at my cages. One 80cm Barney, one Alaska and an Alexander. I spent a couple of hours cleaning up each cage. Tidying up cages I had no intention of using. Right.

Finally, I started lurking on here. Looking at everyone else's adorable pets. Remembered all the high points of animal keeping.

You get the idea. 1 zooplus order and a lot of cleaning, arranging and repeatedly banging my head against the Alexander resulted in this:

I hope my future friend likes it!

(The cage isn't quite complete, I'm grabbing a couple more items when I go to pick up my friend.)

I'm sorry you have had such a hard and emotional 14 months. Losing 9 beloved pets over such a short period of time is totally heartbreaking so I definitely understand the need to have your heart heal and take some time to recover. Hugs to you. With that being said, I am thrilled that you have now decided that the time is right for you to welcome another little darling into your life and heart. There really isn't anything like the joy you get hearing the pitter patter of tiny paws running on a wheel, feeling twitching whiskers giving you whisker kisses, and the sight of a lovable furball greeting you. I do hope that your new little ham and you have years of fun and create the greatest memories filled with adventure together. The cage and its setup look wonderful. I look forward to getting to know your ham and seeing pics when he/she is settled in more. Congrats again, EnerHam!!!!

Great news! So pleased to hear you'll soon have another hamster to love, hamster shopping & messing with cages when you have absolutely no intention of getting another sounds very familiar The cage looks really good & someone is going to be very happy living there with you, looking forward to hearing more about your little one

Oh wow - I love that Alexander cage set up! (You have made me want an Alexander cage all over again.

I am sorry you had so many losses - it is gut wrenching. I know you took in some high risk fur babies that needed a home. Rehoming a hammy who needs it is a wonderful thing to do but we have a level of how much toll/loss we can take when their lives are shorter or they have issues. So I am thinking how nice it would be for you to have a baby hamster to nurture now. If you want to rescue though there are often unexpected litters that need homes xxx And can I just say how amazing it looks again! That colour scheme - pale blue and grey with the contrasting wicker and dark wood Are you an interior designer?

Thanks everyone! I'm glad you like the setup. I'm a complete novice when it comes to interior design but I really do like how the aesthetics turned out. I like blue. You might be able to tell.

The last 14 months have been nothing short of hell, to be honest. Becoming stressed over their sicknesses and then heartbroken over their deaths really took a toll on me. Three guinea pigs, a rabbit, two gerbils and three hamsters. Two of which I lost in April. I've only got a single guinea pig left.
That's why I've decided to take on fewer pets in the future. I think it's for the best.

I've been keeping an eye on all my local rescues for babies/younger hamsters, but they don't have any hamsters at all at present. The one closest to me has ten tonnes of gerbils and the other two seem to focus more on guinea pigs and domestic pigeons respectively. There aren't any breeders near me, either.

Pets at Home's adoption section does seem to have a few older friends waiting for homes, though. There's one particular boy I have my eye on. I'm hoping he'll still be there today. No idea how old he is exactly, but judging by the not so good photo online he's not a baby.

I'm so excited!

Glad you're excited - I think you need a new hamster to care for xxx I found Nugget on pets4homes website - he was part of an unexpected litter after someone got "two boys" from pets at home. You put your postcode and distance in

Ha! The closest hamsters to me on that website are over the other side of London. Alongside preloved and gumtree, all the hamsters I see on these kinds of sites are being sold by breeders and are too far away.

He's here! I got the hamster I wanted. The photo I saw didn't do him justice--it made him look a lot bigger than he actually is. His current name is Ravenclaw-- I'm unsure if I will keep it. He's 16 weeks old and was taken back to the store when his previous owner lost interest. He's currently making a LOT of noise on his wheel.

I think he must be a pretty small hamster if he's 16 weeks already. He's quite chunky but on the smaller end of the spectrum length-wise. He's mostly white with a little cream on his head and two thirds of the way down his body. Maybe some kind of failed band?

I managed to snap a quick photo of him when he was still for longer than two seconds.

"Who are you?"
