Default another hamster help !!!

Hi all

After getting my Syrian girl Nike, I have recently been given a rescue hamster she is a Russian dwarf hamster. Her friend died due to ill health, she had only ever lived in a tiny cage with nothing but water and a pile off food in the center off there cage.

I have given her a bigger cage with lost of floor space and hide outs and shredded paper and care fresh everywhere. she seems to like it however i havent seen her come out yet shes under her her bedding all night and day. When she is awake she just makes burrows and goes back to sleep. I havent seen her eat yet. I have offered fresh fruit to her and shes taken it off me so i guess she okay. how do i make her more confident. any i ideas ? thank you.

Just give her time alone to settle in for 2 or 3 days. I wouldn't give fruit due to the sugars - russian dwarfs are usually hybrids and prone to diabetes, so a sugar free diet would be best. Burgess dwarf supahamster is a good mix for them. Its dwarf specific and sugar free. Maybe try scattering some hamster mix on the bedding and it might encourage her to come out and forage. Keep talking to her through the cage meanwhile so she gets familiar with your voice. It's surprising how they can respond to tone of voice over time. I'm sure her confidence will grow in time. When she is out and about just look and see if she seems healthy and active. If she is hunched or looking unhappy she may need a vet check.

She will probably get more confident with time. The new environment can be quite scary and intimidating to begin with.

Poor little thing! Great to hear she has a nice home with you now.
It will all be so new for her it's bound to take time for her to settle & begin to gain in confidence, I would do as Serendipity suggested & just talk to her for now, even if she's buried in her substrate somewhere she'll begin to get used to your voice & start to come out more. If she's already taken the fruit off you she may not be that scared just enjoying all the new things she has!
As Serendipity said they are prone to diabetes so avoid anything sweet, you could slowly introduce her to veg (not too much of the sweeter ones) & most Russians love mealworms so you could try her with some of those as tempting treats.

You've got a heart of gold giving this little rescue a forever home, she'll gain confidence in no time now she's getting plenty of deserved love from yourself.
