Default Which Species and House

Hi all.

My son is 14 years old and would like to get a hamster. He is talking about getting a Roborovski rather than a Syrian.

Which would be better for him? and is it Roborovski's that you can keep a pair of?

Also, housing - which housing is best for each type?

Looking forward in receiving some help and guidance. Thank you in advance.

A syrian would be easier to handle & tame than a robo, robos are very fast tiny little things, breeder robos that have been handled from a very young age can be fairly easy to tame but pet shop robos can be quite a challenge & some never really become pets to handle & interact with in the way that syrians usually do.
Robos can be kept in pairs but I wouldn't recommend it for someone with no experience of hamsters, most pairs tend to end up needing to be separated when they mature & fall out so if you did get a pair you would need to have a spare cage & the space to house two hamsters separately right from the start as they can fall out quickly at any time.
If you can tell us which country you're in we can make suggestions regarding the best cage.

There are probably more good cages here than most countries so you have quite a good choice, Zooplus is the best place for cages, for a Syrian the Barney & Alaska are both very popular cages, there's also the savic hamster plaza which is more expensive but a really nice cage.
For a robo you might want something a bit smaller & bar spacing would have to be a minimum of 1cm, for a very young or very small robo maybe even no more than 7mm, the hamster heaven (zooplus again) would be ok or if you wanted smaller bar spacing the savic Mickey which is virtually the same cage with the narrower bar spacing, that may be available from amazon, the grosvenor cage might be another option.
The hamster heaven cage is best used without the tubes & penthouse which isn't a problem as stoppers come with the cage, the savic mickey has a metal shelf which can't be used but you can easily make shelves or just use the top of a large house as a shelf.
I have only had Russians & Chinese though so no experience with robo cages, someone else may have more suggestions on that.
