Hamster suddenly scared of me
Hi guys,
So i recently got a syrian hamster named Tofu 7 days ago. She was quite curious the first two days of being in her cage and was not shy at all about me being near her cage or walking up to take a treat from my hand. However, after the first two days, she would run into her hideout whenever I was near her cage and would refuse to come out and take treats from my hand. I dont know what i did wrong because this behavior seems to be out of no where.
The only reasons i can think would possibly cause this behavior is that i placed her outside her cage to tame and maybe she got scared from that. Im a new hamster owner so i dont really know much about hamster behaviors. Her cage is plenty big enough and there are enough toys for her to play with. I also have been doing the scented tissue method everyday but she still runs away from me. help!!

Re: Hamster suddenly scared of me
Congratulations on Tofu!
I also don't have the biggest amount of experience but I do have some thoughts and questions.
I wonder if she is just becoming very 'homey' at home. In the first couple of days you may have not been a threat to her territory, but now it's hers so she's going to react differently. If that's the case then you're doing the right things, you just need to give her more time as you've only had her seven days. Just keep putting scented tissues in, and offering treats, and speaking to her, and hopefully she'll come around. I understand it must have been frustrating though to seem to suddenly go backwards, but perhaps start from scratch. Very sensible of you though to be trying to check if there's any way to improve your chances!
In terms of whether you did anything that precipitated it: when did you take her out of the cage? And how did you do so? And where did you place her to tame? My understanding is that hamsters are easier to tame outside of their territory but that it's best to use some object to remove them from the cage, to not chase them to get them out of the cage and to take them to somewhere contained like the bath tub. They should always come to you.
What sort of cage do you have her in?
I'm 100% sure someone will reply with better advice but thought I would make a starting point.
Good luck!
Best wishes,
Lydia

Re: Hamster suddenly scared of me
It may be that you began a little too early with out of cage taming or the session was too long or a bit stressful for her, I would just give her a few days to settle again, keep talking to her & offer her treats in the cage when she'll come to you again.
Just go slow with taming, when you think she's ready start with just a short session, make a space where she'll feel safe & give her toys to explore, maybe something from her cage that smells familiar to her when she's out.
Try not to disturb things in her cage while she continues to settle again, don't move things or do anything more than spot clean pee for a few weeks so she can get to feel really secure & she should come round again soon enough.

Re: Hamster suddenly scared of me
The novelty of being in a new cage with new things to explore may have worn off. She should setting in given more time.
