Default What toys do syrians like

Finally my zoozone has arrived. Just waiting on fitch bedding (theyre taking their time!) Then i can go pick up my hamster.
I want to get the cage ready before i bring him home.
Right now all i have is the 30cm saucer wheel, a kerbl long bendy bridge, loofah chews and those fruit shaped nibbles.
Im thinking of making a burrow box out of a tissue box.
Is there anything else he will need to keep himself occupied?

Also i have a spare shelf at home i can put in as a platform would that be ok to put his food bowl and home/bed on? Or is it better to be on the substrate?

You'll need to mesh the lid of the Zoozone or they can escape through the wide bars (and they will find a way to get up there!). I would have some kind of tunnel as well. A pringles tube or rat tunnel is a good size - as a floor toy.

Food bowl is fine on platform but bed/house is better on the substrate and open underneath so they can burrow down and bury hoards under the nest etc (they like snacking in bed ).

Thank you for reminding me! Need to add wickes to my list to get the mesh and cable ties from.
Will a pringles tube be safe due to the inner lining? I actually have couple of cans at home i kept to store spaghetti pasta.

People do use them as long as they're cleaned out. The inner from a kitchen roll tube is fine Or a couple of toilet rolls. If it's for a Syrian you'd want to slit those down the side so they expand or they can get stuck. Cardboard egg boxes make interesting extra hides too. Cut a hole in one end and one on top. The "dips" can be somewhere to put some treats like pumpkin seeds. Anything cardboard can be shredded. Some hamsters will rip them to bits and some won't chew them at all

I wouldn't use metal cans.

Syrians like any toys that Dwarf Hamster has, though larger, but some would prefer some toys like a willow tunnel or bridges that is hanging on barred cages. Do be aware that every Hamster depends on their personality, my Toria loves her Trixie Labyrinth more than her old homes and therefore only has the labyrinth, while Teodor loves enclosed spaces to sleep in like behind a plastic toilet corner, two of them are dwarf hamster.

Since you mentioned a Zoozone, I assumed it's a Zoo Zone 1, a saucer wheel isn't that much great in there as it takes way too much space, do you have access to 9 inch to 11 inch wheels? 21 to 28 cm wheels? The Zoo Zone 1 has 32 cm of height so I'm assuming again that it can fit a 28 cm wheel.

I like the rat sputniks for hanging toys. You're a bit limited with the lid of the Zoozone opening upwards as anything attached to the roof needs to clear the front to open the lid (if that makes sense. Hanging a rat sputnik in the middle/nearer the rear of the lid should work. Then you just have to check the hamster isnt in it when you open the lid I have tied a rat tube to the top before - it could leadfrom the platform to somewhere else (eg the sputnik). You can use the cardboard boredom breaker ones and sisal string to tie them up. If you were looking at buying any toys these are my favourites

Hyacinth tunnel - nice and soft, chewable, has multiple entrance holes. Plenty big enough for a Syrian but not as huge as a rat tube.

This trio of balls. I only actually use the hyacinth one as a toy (it's good for sticking treats into under the layers - eg sunflower or pumpkin seeds - so they have to work to get them out - I usually leave a bit of the seed sticking out or they give up to easily!. The sisal one I unravel and use as sisal string - eg for tying a tube to the roof! The wicker one I find a bit sharp and scratchy and don't use.

These are the cardboard boredom breaker tubes - I had one of these tied to the roof - you can just punch holes in it. One of these is also useful to tempt a hamster into with a bit of food at one end if you want to get them out and then put your hands over the ends of the tube and lift it out. Also for out of cage time or in a playpen.

Hamsters generally aren't that interested in playing with toys but they need variety in the cage, hidey places, they like toys that are food related (eg treats stuck in the ball) or chew sticks. They like tunnels to run through.

Having quite a few floor toys adds to enrichment so the cage doesn't seem too empty - but cardboard boxes and toilet roll tubes are fine too

This is the rat sputnik - a kind of plastic hammock. It hangs quite low so they can usually climb in from substrate level (depending how deep the substrate is, although having it next to a platform can be good to encourage them in it. A bit of bedding in the bottom makes it cosier.

If you get one from rat rations they're about a pound cheaper and you can choose various different top and bottom colours.

I'm assuming it's a Syrian hamster you're getting? If not, ignore the rat sized tunnels The hyacinth one is fine for a dwarf hamster as well but the boredom breaker one is too large really (they do make a smaller one). I actually have a rat sputnik in our robo dwarf hamster's cage though just for a bit of variety and somewhere to go.
