Talking James and his new best friend having a night snack

James and "Unnamed" are having a night snack together. This is their fourth day living together and James made it so easy for her to adapt. He is so gentle and loving, he have no problem sharing with her hehe.

Introducing a new ham is always a very risky thing to do especially if you don't have much experience with hamsters but I don't understand why you have put a female in with your male, are you planning on breeding? Breeding can be very dangerous for hybrids as either mum or pups can have a lot of potential problems.
If you have no experience of breeding then I would suggest you separate them as soon as possible so both can remain safe & healthy.

I agree. They do look very sweet, but it can soon turn to fighting or bullying - especially as one is younger and one is bigger.

It takes an experienced owner to introduce a dwarf hamster to another when they haven't lived together since birth or aren't siblings or related.

Looking at the video it seemed to me that one hamster is dominating the food bowl and the other is not getting at it/cautious about trying to feed from it. This is the kind of territorial behaviour that will happen where the larger one will dominate and the other one fail to thrive.

Your new female is very sweet and looks very young. Please get her a cage of her own and let them live separately.

It is our human instinct that wants them to be friends but hamster are extremely territorial by nature, and even siblings who have lived together since birth can start fighting to the death. And the smaller one comes off worst - if not killed they can be seriously maimed and need putting to sleep.

Another big no no for a pair living together is shelves and levels as these do lead to territorial behaviour. On your video you will notice that your larger hammy is on the top shelf and taking food and the younger one is up and down betwee the shelves.

It is a very sweet video but it is a dangerous situation. Your new younger lady really does need her own cage.

I agree with both cypher and serendipity!
Introducing two unfamiliar hamsters together can be really risky, stressful and risky for both the hamsters involved and it should only be done by someone who is experienced. I personally don't recommend keeping hamsters in pairs - as from my experienced they live very happily alone (as they don't need friends) and fight can break out very unexpectedly.
Like cypher says are you planning on breeding both your hamsters? As there are lots of risks involved with doing so and shouldn't be a decision made lightly.
I would advise that you house them individually and not introduce them together again - as your female may become pregnant!

Agree with the above people please get them their own cages to live in, and specially do not keep in mixed gender pairs. Also the cage you have them in is not big enough for one hamster let alone two, please look on the various cage threads here on the forum to find suitable cages for each hamster.
