Question My Hamster is peeing in his bed?

Hi, Ive had my syrian for around a month now (bought from pets at home). Ive tried my best to toilet train him and it seems to be working (ish), he pees in his potty but he also pees in his bed/hideout which is where hes storing his food. ive tried cleaning it out of all the pee and replacing the food and bedding, so that the only part of his cage that still smelt like urine was in his potty but he keeps peeing in his house too. Anyone else have this problem? im just worried that its bad for his health.

Using the toilet in their nest, isn't an unusual behavior, especially in younger hams. How people handle this issue varies from owner to owner, but I personally try to scoop out the noticeably wet bedding, and move it to the litter tray (or designated toileting area). Best wishes

As Drago says, they do take time to get fully toilet trained. Maybe they're like humans and dream they've gone to the toilet and wake up and think - oh I'm still in bed!

Seriously though it's a time thing really. The trouble is you can get itch scratch behaviour. If you take away the hoard, they pee on it to deter people taking it! But it should settle. Sometimes just having the nest removed and having to rebuild it makes them more careful next time.

Our last hamster pee'd in his nest at first, as well as using the potty -maybe they just don't have great bladder control as babies! It stopped quite quickly though.

Continual cleaning out will stress him and could make it worse. Sometimes a minor change can stop the behaviour as it makes them change their habits.

I would suggest a new house, in the same place as the old one. Do you have a photo of your set up? They do best with a house that is open underneath and sat on top of the substrate - they like to bury their hoards under the nest and cosy down a bit.

If you put a larger house in, it can help. Something the size of a shoe box is good and you can then put the litter tray inside the house. That has always worked for me

As the others have mentioned a shoebox makes a wonderful roomy house for hams. As it's open underneath you can put in a nice thick layer of substrate and plain loo roll which they can snuggle down into on cold nights. The size of the box also means you can put the potty inside on the opposite end to his nest (like a little ensuite!).
I use this setup for my hamster and I think he appreciates not having to wander too far when he's sleepy, so he almost always uses the potty
