Question hamster on the plane

Hello,

I am planning on going back to Greece for the summer period as I finish uni and I will be coming back in September. I am planning on having someone taking care of my hamster, but in case something goes wrong I would like to take my hamster with me.
I will be flying with Aegean and they told me that they would only accept hamsters as cargo.

They said that the temperature and the pressure of the cargo area is the same as the passengers area and they would also let me take him on his carriage cage.
Now I am not sure how good of an idea this is, as I have seen various opinions on this matter and I do not know which one to trust. Some people say that hamsters die over transport, some others say that it is just a stressful process..... I honestly do not know what to do if I end up not finding anyone to take care of him

I am curious to know as well. How many hours of distance could they tolerate and should I travel in the morning when they are asleep?
Should I buy one more seat to place them with me in the cabin as well?

I think this topic has come up before and the consensus was - it's not a good idea. No they won't let them go as cabin baggage and yes they might die on the trip in the cargo area. It will be noisy and I thought it was cold in there too? And it would be very stressful. I wouldn't do it. Last time this came up, the person posting was looking at going by ship (that had it's issues too). I think there were some airlines (very rare) who would let you take them as cabin baggage but then there was some other rule that meant it wasn't possible.

Are you going away but coming back after a few weeks? How old is your hamster? It does sound like finding someone to take care of your hamster might be best, but if it's for a long period it might be better to rehome as the hamster will get used to the new environment.

Yeah I have read most of the previous posts on this topics, but since it was a couple of years ago I wanted to see if anyone has tried it or if anything has changed...

I am going away for 3 months, I would honestly prefer it to leave it with relatives or friends it would pain me to rehome my lil hamster, it already pains me that I might have to leave him back here....I only have him for a week and he is 11 weeks old.

The lady on the phone told me that the temperature is the same as the cabin's btw.

So he will be about 9 months old when you go? It's difficult. Three months is a long time for a hamster to live somewhere else - on the other hand he is young enough to adapt to the change of new environment and the change back to you afterwards. If he was older I thought he'd be better being rehomed rather than two changes. I just think it would be a bad experience for a hamster in the hold of a plane, and although you'd miss him, at least you'd know he was safe and there when you come back. You maybe need to try and find someone who already has a hamster so would be happy to hamster sit for 3 months and knows about hammies In the hold he could also be in with cats, dogs and other animals - pretty scary.

I Think you are right, I will try my best to leave him with family. Unfortunately I do not know anyone who is experienced with hamsters...maybe if I reach the point that I can not find anyone, I can try asking around on this forum, although I think that asking a stranger to hamster sit for 3 months is a big responsibility.

I have flown with various animals and the airline are correct when they say that the cargo area for animals is temperature and pressure controlled.

But this is one small part of a long process, and the early check in, and then the waiting in the cargo area and then out on the tarmac can take a long time (1 hour plus in many cases for European flights). I personally would be wary about putting a hamster through this, as you can never know what delays, weather conditions, etc you will have on the day you fly.
Plus his cage might be in the hold with other animals (cats and dogs) which could add to the stress.

When we flew with our rabbits and guinea pigs they were allowed in the cabin in approved carriers, as long as they fitted under the seat in front of us.
The airline gave us the dimensions, and checked the carriers when we arrived to check in.
Will the airline not allow you to bring the hamster into the cabin in an appropriate carrier?

Our dogs always flew as 'cargo' but they were fully crate trained beforehand, and more 'robust' than many smaller animals.
