Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum and to the hamster world - I love it! Anyway, I thought I'd give you an insight as to how I got involved in this community!
It all started around March 2017 while I was at work one evening with a dear friend of mine. We started talking to one of our colleagues and I cant remember how but we got onto the topic of hamsters. Our colleague had told us that her sister had recently purchased a hamster but she literally "doesn't care about it". She told us that she "keeps it in the bathroom because she has no room for her", so this meant that all of the fog from the shower gets into the cage
not good.
Anyway, me and my friend are huge animals lovers and this broke our hearts! We offered to drive around their house that night and to take the hamster away from her if she didn't want to keep it anymore. She agreed and long story short we came across a tiny roborovski hamster in a TINY travel cage with nothing but food and water. We were so upset. We didn't know anything about hamsters but we knew FOR SURE this wasn't right!
We drove down to Pets at Home (UK pet store) and bought her a larger cage (still smaller than the minimum requirement) with a wheel and hide away etc. Still, anything was better than what she was living in! We named her Pip that evening
My friend had wanted to keep her and I was incredibly busy with university at the time so I didn't mind Pip going to my friend. Anyway, around May 2017 my friend has asked me if I wanted to take Pip as her cats were trying to get to her and because she was living in a barred cage she knew it wasn't right. After much deliberation I agreed to permanently adopt Pip but only on the condition that I'd provide her with as best of life as possible!
So, during the time that I had adopted her I made the conscious decision to do as much research on hamsters as possible. I watched Youtubers like Erinsanimals, Hammylux and Hoppinghammy in order to gain as much information as possible. It was after this (and much saving) that I had decided to buy her a MUCH larger cage. This meant that she could have a lot more floor space with the room for more toys etc.
Anyway, fast forward until now and she's now living in a Skyline Marrakesh which measures at 97cm x 47cm, she has a much larger wheel with plenty of hide aways, a playpen, tubes, big water bottle, sand bath and much much more! She is one spoilt hamster and I love her to bits.
Because she's had such an upsetting start in life it has meant that she is not tame. Slowly but surely we are making huge progress and she is now able to eat from my hand. Hopefully it wont be long until she lets me pick her up for cuddles!
Anyway, that's Pips story. I'd love to hear all of yours!
