Bedding in old age
Hi Everyone. My sweet girl passed on the weekend just shy of 2 years old. She had started to slow down a couple weeks ago. One thing is really bothering me. She never used a hideout for sleeping and always preferred to sleep deep down in bedding on the floor of her tank. She would make quite a mess of her bedding every night so in the morning I would pack it down so it was easier for her to walk around during the night. The night she died she was rustling in the bedding and I gently packed it down for her for when she got up. I thought about reducing her bedding in old age in case she didn't have the strength to come back out. Has anyone heard of a hamster not being able to climb back out of their bedding in old age and cause its death? I feel terrible that she might've been struggling to get out her last night and I made it worse by pressing it down for her because I always did this. I always wanted her to have a lot of bedding because she loved it. Thanks.

Re: Bedding in old age
I am so sorry your little girl has passed. It is nothing you have done, it was just her time. I also worried about our hamster not being able to get out of his nest towards the end of his life, but that would not cause them to die. She was probably very comfortable at the end with all that bedding. It's normal to wonder if there was anything you did or could have done better, but it was nature taking it's course. She is running free now, over the rainbow bridge xxx

I'm sorry for your loss. I agree with Serendipity, I don't think you did anything wrong & she just passed away naturally in her cosy nest.

Thanks. I've questioned everything I've done since she's gone.

I think it's only natural but try not to dwell on what if's or maybes, try to focus on the happy memories now.

I did the same - it's part of the grieving process. I found a site and an article that helped me with some of those feelings. It's in this thread - it may help to read it as you'll see that this is a common reaction and there are good words of comfort in it.
Pet loss - where to find help, tips and comfort on the loss of a pet.

Re: Bedding in old age
You may not feel like having another hamster straight away, but we now have another one and it brought us all so much joy and laughter having a new baby hamster in the house. Until we got another one we were all a bit down. I desperately wanted another one within a couple of weeks - not to replace our Syrian, because he was himself, but I really missed having a hamster to care for, and the rewards it brings, and had a bit of an empty hole. Kept seeing hamsters but wasn't quite ready. In the end I waited a bit longer because Souffle kindly offered us one of her next litter. But there is no right time to wait. Some people get another one straight away, some people wait a bit. It helps to get another hamster that is a bit different - a different sex or colour. So they are "their own person/hamster" kind of thing and they also have different personalities Newt, our current Syrian is much more outgoing and active than our previous home-bod snuggly boy! Just different.
I did find, after a fairly traumatic end to our Syrian boy, that it helped me having another hamster, and being determined to get everything right next time around. They are very forgiving when you don't always get things quite right though.

Re: Bedding in old age
Congrats on your new baby. I was thinking about a little robo as a next one for me. I'm researching robo care now and wanna make sure I can provide everything he needs. Thanks.
