Adoption?
I'm a new hamster owner and have done a ton of research, but I'm still wondering whether I should buy a hamster or adopt one.
I would like to adopt one, but I don't know whether it's a good idea, as it would be my first hamster.

Re: Adoption?
I always recommending adopting or getting from a breeder.
Let me explain why. Normally pet stores that sell small animals get their animals from mills. Rescuing hamsters or other small animals means saving an animal's life. Plus you will be giving them a forever loving home.
Getting hamsters from reputable breeders is also an amazing choice. There are a lot of great breeders out there. You can check on the breeding section to see which breeder is closest to your location.
Hope this helps you! Can't wait to meet your new hammie!

Re: Adoption?
If you haven't had a hamster before, ask if you can handle a prospective pet before taking it. Some are naturally friendlier and it will help you to bond with your pet if it's quite friendly from the start.

Re: Adoption?
I think in UK, there are lots of resources to get a hamster, not like Canada though...
To be honest, it really depends. Both hamsters from pet stores and shelters are cute little creatures who are dying for love and care. You could try both places and see which hamster is the one for you.
I wanted to have only one hamster, but I ended up having 3 since every time I visited local pet store, my love for them just cried out. Dumpling was left alone till 2.5 months old in the pet store without any toy aside. Kiwi was bullied by another lady in the pet store. So I took them home without hesitating, and I knew I could compensate them with a much better life.
Bonne chance!

Re: Adoption?
If you're completely new to hamster then adopting a ham may not be the best option, if you have a chance to see the ham first & get to know something of it's history it could be fine & it's always lovely to give a home to a needy ham but if an adoption ham hasn't had a good start in life & may not have been treated properly then you may find taming & bonding could be quite a bit more of a challenge than if you buy a ham.
If you can get a ham from a breeder that would be great, if you can go to hamster shows even better as that would give you the opportunity to speak to breeders & see some of their hams.
Breeder hams are handled from a very young age & tend to be easier to tame.
Many people begin with hams from pet shops as that is often the only option for some & that's fine too.
There's no simple answer to your question really but I hope that gives you a few things to consider.
Good luck with finding the right ham for you.

Re: Adoption?
I would recommend adopting a hamster if you can find one available - you can find some really special hamsters through adopting. Although your are new to hamsters you can be lucky to find hamsters who are already used to being handled and even pets at home can have hamsters up for adoption to who have either been returned (like my current girl) or they have been overlooked.
Although as cypher has mentioned if you get a hamster from a breeder/or a show these would be another option to consider to - these hamsters are often handled from a young age so are used to being handled so are more suitable for first time owners as pet shop hamsters have often had little human interactions - although you can find some really friendly hamsters in pet shop too!
Good luck at finding your hamster!

Re: Adoption?
I buy from a breeder as pet bought hamsters usually take longer to tame and can be more vicious as they are thrown around while being transported to the store.
Rescue is a good idea but make note adopting is not always a option as in some cases with me the nearest one to adopt s far away as in South London there is not many adoption centers etc.
Happy hamster-ing lol xD

Re: Adoption?
I would recommend adopting as there are so many hamsters that need homes and deserve a second chance. However hamsters in pet shops do need homes too. So the final decision is up to you
