Default Hamster wheel

Can someone please help me on the best hamster wheel to buy. I've seen the silent ones and the trixie wheel but the reviews are puzzling me. I go on one site and their raving about a certain one and another site says there not good. I really need one that is quiet as possible because of my three children been light sleepers.

I think the confusion lies with silent spinners. They used to be very good & very quiet but a while back had a redesign which seems to have made them stiff. I use a p@h own brand version which is quiet but is really only big enough for a dwarf species and I don't like the stand. There isn't a set size per hamster for a wheel - it depends how big the individual ham is but they do need to be able to run with a straight back. Silent Runners seem to be popular at the moment but are a bit more pricey and only available from certain suppliers. I don't have one so I can't comment on those. I've also use wodent wheels (a bit more expensive due to limited stockists, quiet when oiled, a fiddle to clean if pee'd in) comfort wheels (pretty rattley) and currently trying a savic orbital (similar in principal to a wodent wheel. Currently very squeaky but should be fine once oiled and easy to oil as no concealed parts) But I don't sleep in the same room as my hams so not sure how quiet they would if trying to snooze!

I've got two hamster one dwarf and one Syrian. Which one have you got for your dwarf? I think I seen one in p@h the other day. It had quite a large base, I think it was £6. I didn't get it because I was unsure if it would be sturdy.
Thank you for your reply

If you want a silent wheel then the Silent Runner (runner not "spinner") or the wood trixie wheel are the best options. You probably won't find either in the shops. Both are available online. The 12" silent runner is an excellent wheel for a Syrian. If it will fit in your cage - it's 35cm tall on it's stand. It's not cheap though - about £25. But it is a safe sturdy wheel and the only one I've had that hasn't broken - had mine more than a year and it's still silent.

Zooplus also sell the wood trixie wheel in either 9" or 11". The 9" one would be good for a dwarf hammy - I have a 9" for our dwarf hammy. There aren't really any 6" ones available except for the silent "spinner" which isn't silent and doesn't spin well these days apparently.

The Wood trixie one is cheaper - but it would need painting with plastikote petsafe paint to waterproof it or it'll get peed in and stink. Plus it has a very nice cork running track and that would get stinky too. I plastikoted my wood wheel and cork track and they're fine. The plastikote adds another £4 to a £7.99 wheel but one bottle would do two wheels. Have added the links

Both are silent because they have ball bearing mechanism. They're both good wheels. If you can afford the silent runner for a Syrian though, I reckon it will last a lot longer and they are excellent wheels.

The 9" silent runner is also fine for a dwarf hamster.

Plastikote - you just paint it on with a small paint brush - doesn't smell of anything. I do a second coat the following day. Paint the cork bit as well. It also helps seal it so there are no splinters.

A local hardware store or B&Q will probably sell the plastikote. Just make sure it's the water based one and not the spray one. Comes in all different colours or clear.

If you get the biggest p@h silent spinner lookalike you can buy a wheel stand separate. I did this as original stand was light weight and made the wheel look like it would fall over.

I have the larger of the two P&h spinners. The blue one. I personally found the plastic base was a bit unbalanced but I had a spare stand from a superset/kaytee silent spinner and the connection is sane. I'm sure you can buy these on their own. It's gone for the robo/Chinesey I've had it for but would be too small for Syrian.
I made a video a while back comparing the original silent spinner (I bought mine when they still spun!) with the p@h version if it helps

Thank you everyone for all the information you have gave me. I love your video aswel, your hamster is so cute
I think I'm either going to go for the wooden one or the p@h one. The only thing that puts me off the wooden one is my dwarf (nibbles) loves to chew the middle part of the wheel we have. I think its out of frustration though because it does come in quite a bit and gets in he's way whilst running

He might chew the wooden one, but probably better for his teeth than chewing plastic
