Default Made the best hamster deal of my life two days ago!

I decided about a month ago that I wanted to get a hamster as I've been pet deprived for a few years now since I moved away from my parents and I want a little furry friend of my own. So I needed a cage! I looked through so many but decided on the Savic Hamster Heaven for various reasons. My plan was to put it on my christmas wishlist and just wait and see, maybe I'd get lucky.

Then, through a random google search looking for reviews, I found the Savic Sky Metro cage for sale in my town, an almost identical cage. I immediately wrote the seller, and went to pick it up on Wednesday - weird thing was that the seller only lived 2km away from me, like what are the odds?

In the end, because she had so many left over things she didn't need anymore, I got the cage, an almost full 60l bag of Carefresh bedding, extra Savic Metro tubes, a running disk and chinchilla sand, all for the price of 47 euros! She was so kind, just said she didn't need it anymore and the price didn't matter! I'm still so happy! I'm a student and I don't have that much money at the moment so I probably wasn't going to get a cage until after Christmas. But now I have good bedding, a cage, some extra tubes for toys, pretty much everything I need for a hamster for such a low price. It just made my week. I've spent a lot of time just staring at the cage the last few days because I didn't think I'd get it so soon. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to pick up my new furry friend next month as a Christmas gift to myself .

That is excellent! I prefer the Sky to the Hamster Heaven anyway. One tip - it's better not to have the external tubes and to block them off and just use tubes as toys inside the cage. Hamsters tend to block themselves inside the tube, they're an escape route and cause cleaning issues. The cage is lovely without external tubes Did she also have the caps for blocking off the external tubes?

I would also add a house (a cardboard box or shoe box would do, with a hole cut in) so your ham can build a big cosy nest for winter. The little pod houses are a bit small. And you'd need a syrian sized wheel as well. The one the cage comes with is too small for a Syrian.

The 28cm Trixie wheel is a popular choice and not too expensive. Then you're all set for your new hamster Also Fitch works out a lot cheaper than Carefresh - and it's dust free - just recycled paper bedding. Depends if you have room to store a 10kg bag in your flat/room.

One of the 10kg bags lasts me about 6 months

So you can afford to have a nice thick layer of substrate - 5 to 6" for digging and burying hoards. Plain white toilet paper is best for nesting material. Tear it into strips and have a big pile somewhere in the cage. The hamster takes bits to build a nest with.

Harry Hamster is a good food option - has enough protein and all the vitamins and nutrients required.

I'd definitely agree on the Fitch(of course that's not an option outside the UK so it doesn't really work in this situation),but I'd avoid Harry Hamster. It has artificial dyes(although not specifically stated on packaging or ingredient lists, but it has been confirmed)which are best kept out of the diet for any species.

An alternative substrate for this particular situation would be hemp.Hemp is not the ideal substrate but it is less likely to cause allergic reactions than wood substrate, and while it probably isn't as good for burrowing as something like Fitch it can be an economical choice and would be much preferred over any wood substrate.

Yippee!! I'm so thrilled for you. That is such a great price and now you are quite a bit further along in making your dream of having a hammy a reality. I do hope that you and your upcoming new hammy find one another so you each will have the most perfect Christmas present ever. I look forward to meeting him/her whenever you get your darling ham. Have fun and good luck on your search.

Thanks so much for your kind messages everyone, I feel so welcome on this forum I do plan on getting an extra house, some toys and a 12" wheel before I get my hammie, I want there to be lots of things to explore! I also plan on setting up a play pen because the cage only reaches the minimum requirements and I'm sure the little fella won't mind some extra room to play in occasionally Thanks for all the recommendations, I really appreciate it.

I do have some questions though:

Quote:
Hamsters tend to block themselves inside the tube, they're an escape route and cause cleaning issues
The woman I got the cage from had taken the tubes off and used the small end capsules because she said it got filled with bedding and stuff but I put them back on because I wanted to see if my future hamster did the same but I didn't know it could be an escape route Do they chew the green parts off or how do they escape, just so I know for sure what to look out for?

My local pet stores sells both Chipsi Hemp substrate (CHIPSI - Chipsi Clean) and aspen wood shavings, they're about the same price and cheaper than Carefresh and Boxo so it's probably going to be either of those ones I purchase in the future. Which would be the best to get? And which would be the best in terms of burrowing?

I'd go with the hemp.It won't be as good for burrowing as a paper substrate, but aspen isn't great for burrowing anyways and the higher potential for allergic reactions(not always automatically seen, reactions can happen over time with constant exposure too!)makes hemp a much better choice

I think the escape route aspect is the tubes can be pushed out or break open. Mainly it just encourages unnatural behaviours and unnatural nesting habits. The hamster ends up losing its nest regularly because it gets pee soaked in the tubes. Their habit is to stuff up any entrance to the nest with paper, so if they nest in the tube and stuff up the tube - well it just doesn't work And then they get all frazzled and you get frazzled because it's more cleaning - and they hate the cleaning too.

They do love tunnels and tubes but they work much better as floor toys or ramps. I like the big cork logs as a floor toy - they treble up as a tunnel, a climbing toy and a ramp up to a shelf. And they're quite lightweight so don't sink into the substrate.

The cage is so nice without the tubes anyway. Not saying you shouldn't try them but most people end up removing them and blocking them off. Hammies biggest motivations seem to be to nest and hoard and to be inaccessible. At least if they do that at substrate level you can spot clean easier and their hoards stay in tact buried more.
