Sleepy insta hams
I often peruse #syrianhamster on Instagram and have found many of the posts feature hamsters sleeping in their owners arms/hands/etc.
Whilst Lil will often sit contently on my hands/lap for a short period, she has never snuggled up and gone to sleep.
I always get her out whenever she naturally wakes up, usually 8 or 9pm. I understand this is when she has just woken up so can understand why she is full of beans.
It just makes me wonder if these Insta-hams have been woken up during the day and that's why they're so snoozy?
I understand that domesticated hamsters will not act as they would in the wild, but it is my understanding that they still like to nest rather than sleep exposed like that?

Re: Sleepy insta hams
This worries me too. I hope its the case that the hamster is only taken out for a cute photo and the owners aren't forcing them to play or anything. If any hamster falls asleep on you or in the open you should definitely put them back in their cage.

Re: Sleepy insta hams
I don't always think it's a case of the hamsters being woken up to pose for photos and can sometimes be down to the hamster's individual personality. One of my Chinese boys is ever such a laid back lad and he's fallen asleep on me several times and providing I have nothing else that needs doing, I don't see the point is disturbing him if he's comfortable to put him back in his cage. He wakes up when he's ready and that's worked fine for us.

That's reassuring to here, Fluffagrams. I wish Lil was a sleepy lap dweller

Re: Sleepy insta hams
Like Fluffagram said, I think a lot depends on the hamster. Some are more chilled than others. It doesn't mean that one is more "correct" than the other: And also bear in mind how many attempts did it take to get that photo? Things aren't always as they seem so it may look like they've been there for ages when it reality it could be a short space of time. Think how many different selfies people take and from different angles to get the right one & imagine that with hamsters - you only have to look at my camera roll to see how many I take just to get one cute one in focus to have for Hamster of the Month on here!

Re: Sleepy insta hams
I've seen similar pictures of hamsters asleep in their owner hands - I think it has to be due to their personality they must be very calm and lazy/sleepy individuals. I never had a hamster who has fallen asleep in my hands although my Sherbet loved to snuggle around my neck when she was out for cuddles on the sofa.
