Sazzle, this is a very difficult time I know that. A trip to the emergency vet is worth it only if you think he is suffering and in pain. If however he is sleeping and seems comfortable, as cypher said, the there is nothing wrong in waiting until tomorrow. If he is shutting down and slowly passing, then it is kinder just to leave him be and to pass quietly in his nest and familiar surroundings. Sometimes this takes a day or two as they are not quite ready to go. But with no signs of distress, he is not suffering and the stress of a vet visit may be worse.
Only you can tell how he is and take the final decision. Either way, you love him and can only do your best.

Thank you so much for your kindness. He’s still hanging on but very shaky and disorientated. I’ve put some bedding around him in the hope that he can sleep again.

This is so hard - I went through this because our Syrian just kept hanging on and on. It really comes down to whether you think he is suffering. Yes it is best if they pass in peace in their cage - but if it goes on too long then he could be suffering. It's very difficult to know what to do but you will just know I think. That's what people told me. I thought it sounded as if he was unconscious but then read how he had crawled out of his nest. That sounds to me like he is preparing to go - they often leave the nest and find a a place to go when they're ready. If he looks comfy and peaceful then maybe it is best to leave him, but put food and water nearby in case he needs it.

If he doesn't go and isn't taking food and water any more over the next day or so then I think that is the time to help him on his way maybe. But if he seems comfy and peaceful I would leave him. Our last Syrian was unconscious but still didn't go and then had a prolapse. Because he had a prolapse I was sure he must be suffering or in pain and took him to the vets.

Thank you.

I’ve put him some shallow dishes with food and water in but he’s shown no interest. He is sleeping again now though but occasionally gets up and drags himself somewhere else.
I feel absolutely heartbroken. I have loved him so much.

I’ve decided that if he’s still hanging on tomorrow I’m going to take him to be put to sleep at his own vet.

Thank you so much for your support & kindness.

I think that sounds like a good decision - so hard. See how he is tomorrow.

It is heartbreaking but you are doing all you can for him & I think that's a good decision too.

If you think he is really suffering then I would take him. But if he seems settled most of the time I would wait. There is stress in both options and he may give you a sign and you will know if he needs help - so he could well help you make the decision. If you're not sure then it is probably best to leave him.

Hello again. So here is an update.
He seemed to settle okay when I went to bed last night. I left him some food & water and he got into his bed. When I got up this morning, he got up too and seemed better than yesterday. He had his eyes open too. I offered him a piece of cucumber which he took and ate, and I checked and he had drank some water from his bottle. He then started crafting his bed from his tissue, something which he’d never have been able to attempt how poorly he was yesterday. I was so relieved but still a little unsure. I asked a relative to call in and check on him while I was at work, and he was sleeping in a much more calm way than the jerking of yesterday.

So now I’m back from work, I can see that he’s drank some more and taken food from his dish, and the other piece of cucumber that I left him, and he has popped his head out of his bed to say hello.

I’m ever so confused!! Obviously I’m not going to take him to the vet tonight now, and I don’t want him to be put to sleep if he’s showing improvement, but I know I will have to monitor the situation daily as it could happen again.

I actually said my goodbyes to him last night, and told him that if he was ready to go I wouldn’t let him suffer. I fully expected him to be gone by this morning - I certainly didn’t expect improvement!

Do you think this is something that could happen? That he might recover again.
He’s certainly a fighter I’ll say that for him!

I’m not sure I can take the emotional rollercoaster though! Xx

The rollercoaster time is hard. Twice I checked on my little fellow in his nest fully expecting to find him gone. But he was not. So long as he was taking food and water or moisture and just tucked up in his nest the rest of the time, he did not seem distressed. He used his pee area until the last 2 days. As Serendipity said, she found her elderly boy rallied and declined more than once before she took the decision to go to the vet with him. That is a judgment call based on your assessment of his condition. I have read others say better a day too soon than a day too late. In my case I was fortunate that he quietly faded steadily and never showed pain or distress. For you Sazzle, just care for him as best you can and you will feel what is best for your lovely boy.

I think Coco said it all really, it is a real rollercoaster emotionally but all you can do really is take it one day at a time, you're giving him all the love he could wish for & are putting him first & I'm sure he knows that.
