fire alarms and hamsters
I live in a building where roughly every 3 months someone sets the fire alarm of. There has never even been an actual fire and stupidly the fire brigade can't put the alarm off which means the very loud alarm can go on for about an hour! I remove my hamsters from the building when this happens. I have just got a russian dwarf hamster and I am especially worried about the distress caused to him so have decided to rehome him. I have also decided that I just cannot have another pet while I live here due to this stupid situation I've been put in. I thought it had ended as everything had been quiet for a good period of time but idiots never go away. It's a shame because my hamsters have all been rescued and Have big cages and good food and attention but I just am forced to live in a home unsuitable for a pet and in some ways unsuitable for people. I don't like to think what distress my hamsters could suffer if I am out and can't remove them.

Re: fire alarms and hamsters
I'd agree with what has been said above. Over time, they'll get used to loud and random noises like that. I know my hamsters used to flip over the sound of a vacuum, but now they won't even budge from their sleep. I wouldn't stress yourself over this so much. Sorry you're in this situation. For now it may be best to hold off on newer hamsters to avoid this stress, but if you have some currently, just try to work around this. Best wishes

I agree with Sukirutski & Cypher, they adjust, mine freaked out the first couple of times when I had the hoover on but adjusted.
First time noises can be scary for them but, I would make a fuss of them afterwards and reward them with a treat.

Re: fire alarms and hamsters
This is a lot louder than a hoover! It's deafening! Snowball was screaming. And it often lasts an hour even though there is no fire. Snowball is being rehomed but Hammy will have to take the risk because her cage is too big to move. Unless it gets sorted I don't consider this a place I can keep pets.

Re: fire alarms and hamsters
I guess its a case of ham hams have different sort of personalities some can handle high pitch deafening fire alarms like my ham hams and some can not like your ham hams. What type of cage does Hammy have cuz maybe you can cover it with a heavy blanket and leave a enough room to get air in it still. Also what do they have for a hide away.

Re: fire alarms and hamsters
Hi. I don't think a blanket would help much. It's also the long time it lasts for-well over an hour. Have considered a sound proof hideaway but not come up with anything. It's a crazy situation. Snowball is going to live with my parents. I'm afraid hammy will have to take the risk. My worry is if I'm out and they put up with this when I'm out and can't move them. I've decided to have no more pets until this problem stops or I move out.

Re: fire alarms and hamsters
keep your hamster in its cage and muffle the sound as much as possible. if there are any gaps around the edge of your door cover them with cloth to muffle the sound and if you have a bin cage or a travel cage you can move easily and you have a room a bit further from the sound. try move the hamster to the quietest place in the apartment. If your hamster really cant handle it try to move to a quieter apartment if its possible.
