Default 31 Days of October

1st - Pumpkin

I am starting this month of with a look back to this day last year - as on the 1st October 2016 I started Pumpkin’s taming sessions - I still remember that day as if it was yesterday so I can’t quite believe that a year ago when Pumpkin used to tremble/shake whenever she braved climbing into my hand. However as time went on Pumpkin soon became my sweet cuddly troublemaker - who loves lots and lots of cuddles!

Also during her taming sessions Pumpkin discovered her love for mealworms! The only treat that I could use to persuade her it was time to go back in her cage - she would eat her mealworms in her transport box on route back to her cage. Still to this day mealworms remain Pumpkin’s favourite treat!

Here are a few of my favourite photos from Pumpkin’s taming sessions …

Really looking forward to the rest of the month

2nd – Lavender and Poppy

Today, I thought I would introduce you to my very first pets – they weren’t hamsters but Guinea-pigs!

In 2004, my parents decided to allow me and my brother to get our first pet. I wanted a hamster but I wasn’t allowed one instead my parents had thought about getting us a guinea-pig each. Later 2004, we adopted two guinea-pigs from a rescue centre – who we named Lavender and Poppy.

Poppy was Lavender’s foster mother. Poppy and Lavender’s mother had been brought into the rescue centre pregnant and they both experienced problems in labour – Poppy unfortunately lost all of her babies and Lavender’s mother sadly passed away leaving Lavender and her siblings without their Mum. The rescue decided to see whether Poppy would foster Lavender and siblings to raise them as her own – which she successfully did.

Lavender and Poppy were both such wonderful guinea-pigs they were very friendly and didn’t mind being handled, cuddled and stroked. Although they did have a habit of peeing on our laps, which we didn’t notice until we started to feel a warm sensation. They lived in their DIY hutch (built by my grandad) which we kept inside a heated playhouse – which kept them warm in the winter and during the summer month they spent the daytime in their outside run were they got to enjoy eating the grass – they were excellent lawn mowers. Both also thoroughly enjoyed their home-grown vegetables which my dad had specially grown for them – sometimes they would even turn their noses up to shop bought veg! They always knew exactly when it was their dinner time and they would wheek in excitement for their veg.

Lavender was my guinea-pig and she was a Red eyed white Abyssinian and Poppy was my brothers and she was a red eyed, brown and white American shorthair. Poppy was also blind in one eye – we adopted her like this but we still got her eye checked over by our local vet and they confirmed that everything was fine with the eye itself so it didn’t need to be removed.

Here are a few photos of both Lavender and Poppy (RIP) …

Thank you souffle, Thin Lizzy and cypher. Lavender and Poppy were such amazing first pets they taught me so much about owning pets and the responsibility of being a pet owner. I enjoyed every moment I got to spend with them both.

3rd – Lavender and Poppy (Continued)

I decided to continue on from yesterday’s post so I can share a few more of my favourite photos and of both Lavender and Poppy.

Although Poppy was more my brother guinea-pig – I still loved her as if she was mine and I really enjoyed spending time with them both. Even though she was blind in one eye this didn’t affect her doing her normally guinea-piggy things and also her eye never caused her any discomfort. In 2007, Poppy sadly peacefully passed away and left us and Lavender to go the bridge. That day was extremely difficult for me to come to terms with as she was the first pet I had ever lost and it was very hard realising that Poppy was no longer with us.

When my parents told me that we were getting guinea-pigs, I remember telling them I wanted a white guinea-pig, which was lucky as Lavender was the only one of her siblings (along with Poppy) who was still up for adoption and fortunately she was all white!. I found the only problem with having a white guinea-pig is they don’t stay white for long (even after a bath) – as Lavender used to pee where she slept therefore her bum was more yellow than white and she also used to dribble veg juice down her chin so often styled a green or red chin depending on which veg/fruit she ate. Lavender passed away peacefully in 2010 to join Poppy (and also Honey and Caramel) at the bridge.

Lavender and Poppy have remained the only guinea-pig that I have ever owned. Although I do really love Guinea-pigs, however I suffer from asthma and bad hayfever which the their hay used to trigger of which made interacting with them a little difficult.
