10th - Toffee

On the 7th August 2013, I welcomed home Toffee, she was a very shy and fearful girl who got easily overwhelmed and spooked my unfamiliar noises. Initially after bringing her home Toffee spent most of her time hiding from me and would only brave coming out if she knew I wasn’t around, this made taming a little difficult to begin with but she soon started to relax with me and with plenty of time, Toffee finally managed to trust me and our bond grew – as she soon realised that she was safe with me. Toffee was very protective of her cage and I soon learnt not to place my hand in her cage if she was in there but outside her cage was a complete different story – she would didn’t mind being handled and was a sweet and friendly girl who just knew how to pose perfectly for my camera. She had a truly special personality!

Toffee would thoroughly enjoy every evening coming out for cuddles and would enjoy exploring the sofa. Due to Toffee nature of getting easily spooked I ensured that she had plenty of safe hiding places where she could go when she felt unsure or spooked. One of her favourite was a hamster sized tent …

Toffee looks really lovely SKB, another beautiful girl! She has such amazing eyes & lovely colouring too.

It's good to see Cotton working for her peanuts My boys don't show any interest until I've practically opened it for them lol. I do like the crunching sounds they make with the shells though

Cookie, sounds like a real character, very pretty and clever too. Sounds like she knew exactly how to get what she wanted

Thank You Drago, cypher, BorisPasha and Thin Lizzy. It was so lovely when she managed to finally trust me it took a lot of patience and I even at first had to set her cage up in the playpen with a line of treats leading out whilst I sat at a distance keeping completely still and silent - I gradually got nearer and nearer to the playpen. I can't forget the feeling when Toffee braved climbing into my hand for the first time luckily I was videoing her at the time and managed to record that very special moment. I to loved Toffee's colouring - she instantly caught my eye when I first saw her as she was a different colour from her sisters. That first photo is also my favourite - it the photo I have framed on my wall and also my screensaver on my computer.

11th – Toffee (continued)

Toffee favourite thing to do was dig and burrow she would spend the most part of the evening when she wasn’t running in her wheel burrowing around in her substrate. It used to be really sweet watching substrate moving as she moved around beneath the surface and then re-emerging. Although sometimes Toffee had other ideas with her substrate, and I would often awake in the morning to a pile of wood shavings on my unit and also on the floor leaving parts of the cage with no substrate at all …
(Please ignore that the cage base says Cookie on it, as when I had Cookie I thought it would be a good idea to write her name on the cage base in permanent marker forgetting how hard it can be to remove later!)

On the 30th June 2014 I had noticed Toffee was showing some sign of wet tail so I rushed her to the vets and they confirmed to me that Toffee had wet tail. My heart instantly sank and I burst into tears – Toffee was given medicine I tried everything I could I help Toffee to fight through a recover from wet tail. But sadly on the 2nd July 2014, Toffee passed away in her nest. She was only around 1 year old. This was extremely difficult to me and I even thought of not getting another hamster as I didn’t want to possible experience wet tail again.

Heartbreaking that Wet Tail cut her life short, but she was so loved in that short time with you.

Love the photos of Toffee burrowing & the mess on your unit made me laugh, looks very familiar lol!
Really sweet photo of her with her whimzee croc & that last one is just adorable.

So sad that her life was cut short by wet tail & you lost her at such a young age, that must have been very hard for you but she has left you with so many lovely memories, a very special little girl.

Thank You Thin Lizzy and cypher. I found it so difficult losing Toffee when she was around a year old – especially as we had developed such a close bond and she was gaining more confidence. However we shared a wonderful time together and she has left me with so many special memories which still to this day I cherish.

12th – Sherbet - Snuggles

Some of you will remember Sherbet my sweet snuggly girl – she was the hamster I had when I joined HC.

Sherbet loved her beauty sleep therefore I have so many photos of Sherbet sleeping in a wide range of places – basically Sherbet would sleep anywhere - she even liked to sleep on her hammock in her cage. Sherbet was also a deep sleeper and was able to clean her cage whilst she will still fast asleep in her house whereas all of my other girls would have insisted on giving me a helping hand.

Some pictures of Sherbet asleep in her handmade snuggle pouches and a photo of Sherbet when she was still a youngster fast asleep in her house as well as a photo I managed to get of her yawning! ...

Although Sherbet favourite place to sleep when she was out for her cuddle time was snuggled around my neck! I do really miss this!

Over the next 3 days I will be sharing a few more photo of Sherbet as I took more photo of Sherbet that my other girls I found it even harder to decide on my favourite photos to share.

Just catching up. Toffee and Sherbert were beautiful.
I love how Toffee’s little pink stand out. So sad her life was cut short x
