Default Chinese or Syrian personality

Hey there,
I'm trying to decide wether to adopt a Syrian or a Chinese hamster. It could be my last hamster in a while as I'll be leaving school in a couple of years, so I want to choose well!
I have owned 2 female Syrians who have had lovely personalities and I feel like I've been able to bond with. However, my male Russian was very jittery and seemed a bit off the loop!
I'd like to have a hamster that I can bond with and i love Chinese hamsters, but I'm not sure if I'm likely to find one that is as fun to handle as Syrians? Anyone able to compare the two? Personalities especially?

Thanks

Default Re: Chinese or Syrian personality

I think it's difficult to generalise personality based on species and out of my five Chinese I've got some that are lively and playful and some that are more laid back. I've had Syrians before and they've been friendly but they've not been as easy to handle as most of my Chinese have. Chinese can be very agile and are excellent climbers so so you may witness a different kind of playtime with them, particularly if you give them some climbing toys.

Chinese can be quite sensitive to their environment and some don't do well in larger cages so I think an open mind is needed and depending on their previous handling, may be a little shy. This can often be overcome with the right environment and handling.

I'm not sure where you are in the world but Chinese can be harder to find and even in the UK and Europe, they're a lot less common in pet shops than Syrians which could perhaps limit your choices to a degree but if you do find a Chinese, you'll find that they can be an intelligent and charming pet.
