Default Guilty feelings.

Does anyone else feel guilty as hell when they have to put their hams back in the cage?
Flower hates her cage, hates it so much she constantly chews the bars and is all stressed in there at night, in the day she's fine, sleeping, plodding about but at night, it's pretty upsetting.
I let her out at 9.00 as soon as she wakes up because she's by the door and she gets free roaming, ball time, running on the bed time, handling time, sand pit time, toy time, treat time, more free roaming. She can be out for two hours or more, but when I have to go to bed and put her back in, it breaks my heart. She's at the door staring at me, running back and forth, chewing. She's not in as a small cage, for those of you who don't know, it's a Barney, 12" wheel, all the stuff she needs, chews and the likes, deep substrate, but she just hates it so much. I feel so horrible putting her back in at night.
Her new tank cage is coming tomorrow (cost me nearly £100 with the new toys too) along with a bunch of new stuff including one of those borrow boxes I know she'll love. But I'm thinking she'll be the same in that too only without the bar chewing.
Anyone else's hamster do this?

Sounds like your Flower is quite an individual ham! Of the 8 hamsters I have had, only one was as extreme as Flower. He would bar chew constantly to be taken out - even during the day! As a result, he spent most of the day (if we were around) in his playpen. He wanted to be out all day and all night - God knows when he slept as he always seemed to be awake!

My other hamsters have enjoyed playtime and always been keen to come out, but not actively distressed by being in their cage. Quigley, my current hamster, will often keep climbing out the door and get confused looking for the exit when you shut it. But, he soon loses interest once he realises play time is over and runs on his wheel instead.

Maybe Flower will like her new tank better? Since there won't be anywhere for her to chew, she might start to play with her toys instead and find she actually enjoys it. Plus, you will be able to get a good 12 inches of substrate in there for her to dig in. That should provide done distraction!

As April says, when the tank comes, think about lots of enrichment for it. You might need to "fence off" one end where the wheel goes - about 6" or so with hardly any substrate for the wheel to stand in, and something like a medium sized bendy bridge on its end as a fence, and then much deeper substrate beyond that in the rest of the cage. I think you'll definitely need a platform for enrichment. And a good sized house (the one from the Barney cage maybe if she's using it). And maybe think about making it really interesting with one or two things attached to the roof. It is a smaller space I think than the Barney, so try and make it as interesting as possible. What wheel do you have? Just checking it will fit in the Kerry!

She is an absolute character but she's just so unbelievably friendly. No taming required at all! The very first hour she was up my arm and all over me. Same in the shop that's how I knew I wanted her.
The order arrived today but behold, they sent the wrong item! so I've got to wait for it to be collected tomorrow and the right one sent. Not cool!
I've got her a 12" Trixie wheel and a fence to separate where it'll go in the tank for little substrate there, then I can pile it up in other places. I've got her steps, sand pit, bendy bridge, hideaway, house, see saw, burrow box, I'm thinking of getting her a bridge to hang from the roof too.
She can actually use an 8" wheel but she's large and she's not finished growing yet so I'd rather her have the 12" for safety for her back.
