Default The Hamster And The Fridge Magnet

In case any of you see this story doing the rounds on Facebook and Twitter, this seems to be the original article from 2012

Poor little ham! I can only imagine how horrible that must have been for him. I don't like when hamster stories come out and begin circulating. The story always somehow changes, and many people get the wrong idea about their hamsters! I'm glad this ham is okay

If you do the maths, Drago, I'm sure he's playing at the Rainbow Bridge by now I'm sure he's regaling all the other hamsters with his "15 minutes of fame"

As the mother of two of the humans involved in this story - the veterinary student who told us the tale and her sister who tweeted it - I can assure you that this was a completely different incident and hamster than the 2012 one, which coincidentally happened just a few miles from where we live. That is the only similarity - the latest incident actually happened last year, quite some distance away at my eldest's vet school. We all know that hamsters love to stuff things in their pouches, sometimes including highly unsuitable items (I say this having once had to retrieve a coco rock from one of our hamsters) so it's hardly surprising that more than one hamster in the history of hamsterkind has been tempted by a small magnet. I can also reassure you that the hamster made a good recovery and the owners were a lot more careful about what they left lying around on the kitchen floor in case hammy decided to go AWOL again.

As for the tweet, we've no idea why it went viral - I guess folk just like a sad story with a happy ending.

I saw this and at first I was really shocked that the hamster was in the same position for 3 days. As I read through the story I felt so relieved the hamster is ok.
I know I wouldn't have let the hamster sit in the same position for a long time.
As to why it went viral, it's a bizarre but true story with a very happy ending and as a nation of animal lovers we love hearing what some pets get up to.

Lol true! I suppose though it's good he didn't die stuck to the bars? Hams really do find themselves in some odd situations
