Default Least smelly hammy?

I'm trying to decide what hamster to get. I love syrians but I've heard that they can be a bit smellier than the smaller species. And that females can have a stronger smell than males. My Dad doesn't like hamsters anyway, mostly because they make the room smell, so I'm trying to convince him with the best option.

Also, what would you suggest is the best bedding for odour control? I know there are a few different methods of cleaning cages, like spot cleaning every day and changing the top layer every 2 weeks and all the bedding every month. What works best for you?

Hamsters honestly aren't smelly at all, as long as you aren't using woodshavings as bedding. Female Syrians can be slightly smellier when they are in heat but that is it. I have a Winter White who does not smell at all.

Fitch bedding is the best bedding for hamsters due to its lack of dust, affordability and how good it is for tunneling. I spot clean every few days and change the bedding every six weeks or so, but every hamster needs a different routine.

Are we talking about the hamsters themselves, or their cages?
Male Syrians smell the least. Female Syrians smell the most. Female dwarfs tend to smell faintly like mushrooms to me, while male dwarfs have a...strong scent, but it's no where near as bad as female Syrians.
For cages, they're all the same. It just depends on whether or not they're potty trained, and how often their toilet areas are cleaned.

I am the odd one out, but I've always found my Syrians to smell! It's likely just me, being sensitive to the scent of urine. It's just worth noting that their urine will smell and so smaller hams would theoretically have less of a smell as they produce less urine. I have only owned robos and Syrians before so I can't really speak from experience. However, I notice my Syrian cages get pretty whiffy, while my robo's cage barely smells at all

You could try to potty train by putting a bowl of Chinchilla sand in the cage. Heaven (Syrian) is potty trained along with Chloe, a WW. My robos cage need cleaning evert 5-6 weeks, sometimes a dwarf is diabetic or just plain strong odor. Dakota (russian dwarf) stinks, she's smellier than all my hammies combined.

If you can get the hammy potty trained then it will be a good thing.

I looked after a female syrian for a week and the cage was a bit whiffy by the end of it. I'm not sure what bedding was used (I think it was something wood based) but I was spot cleaning every day. I imagine my Dad has only been around syrians, probably with cages that weren't spot cleaned daily. I do really like the idea of giving the hamster a sand bath, which could possibly double as a potty, depending on what the hamster does. Thanks guys x

I've found it varies, Twinkle was quite smelly when in heat whereas I've had a few females who weren't. I found my males weren't. Spot checking daily will prevent the cage getting too smelly.
