Found hamster dead
Hi everyone I'm heartbroken and upset and I need to know if I did something wrong. I've had pets and hamsters before but I've never had the roborovski hamsters so we went to the pet shop and bought a pair of female hamsters. they looked healthy and we named them penny and Luna. penny was a bit strange as she did a lot of running around and backflips. I thought she may have had a nervous system problem. I checked them yesterday and they were fine I didn't check them yesterday evening because I was ill. when I went to see them this morning only Luna come out which was weird so I went to investigate, I just discovered Penny's half eaten body. I was shocked and I didn't know what to make of it there was no blood around the corpse, the body was intact but the skin and flesh were gone of the skull. I think it was a genetic disease and she may have had a heart attack I don't think luna killed her because there was no blood around there. I don't understand what happened.

Re: Found hamster dead
I am so sorry to hear this. The back flipping she suffered make it almost certain she was suffering from an inherited neurological disorder which is well known in robos. It is most likely that she passed very quickly and painlessly from a stroke or brain haemorrhage and she would have been gone in an instant and felt nothing.
The behavior in disposing of the body is a natural instinct in most small animals so don't fret about it. In the wild a dead animal would attract predators so by instinct they try and get rid of it usually by eating it. I hope Luna is OK. I would advise you keep her alone now and do a cage clean and let her settle. She will be OK once she gets used to it and hopefully will be friendly with you and enjoy coming out.
Run free at the bridge Penny free from your illness now x

Thank you very much for your message and sorry for the structure of the message, I was on my break
and speech-typed nearly everything. I just cant get my head around it, they were such good sisters and so cute together. We only had them for about a month or so. I know I didnt do anything wrong but I still feel guilty. I also know she was probably having a stroke or heart attack because she was just lying in one place with no blood around.

Re: Found hamster dead
I’m so sorry for your loss.
I agree with Souffle. Nerolougical disorders are sadly common in robos. Eating hamster after on has passed away is a natural instinct.
You will be missed Penny. xxx
