31 days of May
Hello. I am going to start May off with a brief introduction and then the story of my first hamster.
I have recently moved in with my Mother to become her full time carer. I brought with me all my pets ...
Two dogs, Jojo (black labrador with a white chest) and Tass (orange and white collie with black eye liner).
Four rabbits who are all bonded into a group and live in a shed/run.
Two guinea pigs who live in the dining room (now the guinea pig room).
Four hamsters; Kashi lives in the dining room near the guinea pigs. Gopal, Arun and Fairy all live in my bed room.
Fortunately my Mother is very taken with the dogs and enjoys hearing about the little pets.
I got my first hamster when I was about ten. My parents took me to a place called Parslows hamster farm where they had cages full of hamsters. I was in heaven! (I didnt think of the implications of this mass breeding).
After careful consideration I chose a small short haired black eyed cream hamster. He settled in straight away and was soon sitting in his cage washing.
I was able to handle him almost immediately and he was gentle and inquisitive. I hand fed him sunflower seeds and taught him to come to his name. He had free range time in my bedroom every day and was a lovely introduction to hamster keeping.

You have been to Percy Parslows. WOW I am in awe of this! He was a legend in the hamster world and his knowledge was amazing. He built the foundations of type and temperament and introduced many new colours to the fancy through his breeding.
I am looking forward to seeing some of your pets. They sound wonderful. Do you have any pics of your first Parslow hamster?

Re: 31 days of May
What a start to this month ff. you blew my childhood memories wide open! My parents lived near to Parslows Hamster farm. I had 5 hamsters as a child and they all came from there. I had completely forgotten about where they came from until your opening to this month. I had to look him up on the web to check that my memory did not deceive me. I had no idea he was such a legend in the hamster world. Wow...

Ooo great. I had no idea he was a legand in the hamster world either. How awesome.
Never got any pics of Horace. He was soooo sweet and calm. Glad he was from such a good breeder.

Ooh this is really interesting! I read an article about Percy Parslow quite recently and as Souffle says, he was a legend.

Re: 31 days of May
So today I am going to talk about Gopal my fluffy male syrian (one of them) who is from Towey Vale Hamstery;
I originally contacted Towy Vale Hamstery to see if they knew of any roborovski breeders near me (Cardigan at that time). They didnt but did offer to collect a female roborovski from a show that they were going to.
A friend drove me to go and collect the roborovski on the appointed date and we looked round the hamstery ... OMG so many beautiful hamsters all waking up and coming eagerly to the bars.
They just happened to have a litter of lh chocolate hamsters who were old enough to leave home. My friend picked one up ... he was all fluffy and cute and mellow. She fell in love. So did I!
After a few weeks she realised that she didnt have the time to properly commit to him and gave him to me (Happy Christmas). The only space for a cage in my room at that time was by my bed, right beside my pillow in fact. He settled in really well and made his nest just next to me (xxxxxx).
He has been a constant delight. Allowing strokies from the word go and enjoying time in his play box. He will be two in September this year and is showing no signs of slowing down at all. He is healthy plump and happy!
