Question How many Roborovski hamsters can I have per tank?

I have a tank that is 60" x 12" x 12" (L x W x H) So in total is 720 square inches. I was just wondering how many Robo hamsters I could house in there. Thanks in advance.

When it comes to housing dwarf hamsters together, I believe that two is the limit. There are only certain species that can be housed together, and even though Robos can be housed together, doesn't mean they will get along. I would only recommend 2 if you're putting them together at most. In case they were to fight, you would have to section off the tank or get more cages, which would be expensive. They would still both have 360 sq in, which is better than most cages. Basically, I'd recommend only housing 2 at most.

I really wouldn't recommend getting a large group of hamsters. You would have to know signs of falling out and when to separate them. The more hamsters, the more the vet bills will cost if they attack each other. I just had to separate my pair of robos due to them fighting, and they seem much happier by themselves. Housing a pair of hamsters together is a risk, much less housing several together. You would have to have properly sized cages prepared for each hamster in case they all started fighting. You're have to have as many wheels, water bottles, and hideouts as you have hamsters which will quickly take up room in your cage. I'd only recommend keeping groups of hamsters to very experienced hamster owners. If you have any more questions just ask

I personally would only recommend one robo. Hamsters are solitary by nature, and won't benefit from having a friend. A good majority of pairs end up having to be seperated or will fight to the death unfortunately. Plus, one robo is not any lesser than two! It allows you to bond more with him/her as an individual

If you absolutely must have more than one, then a pair would be best. The most I've seen get along is three, but I wouldn't recommend that to be honest. Good luck with your new ham(s) Please let us know if you have any other questions

Robos can be kept in groups, I don't have personal experience of that so I would suggest you do as much research as you can into keeping groups before getting any.
The first consideration has to be how much space do you have! No matter how much care you take over keeping groups or pairs there is always the potential for them falling out & needing to be separated so you have to have adequate space to house each one individually & be prepared for that from the start as they can fall out at any stage & fights can escalate too quickly for a wait & see approach.

I had two roborovski hamsters in a 100 x 50cm cage. They run around a LOT. They fell out and have lived separately ever since.

I would always have single hamsters from now on. It was very stressful and worrying when they were not getting on together and a great relief (to me and to the less dominant hamster) once they were living separately.

Good luck with your new hamster(s).

This link from a robo breeder has info on suitable cage size for Roborovski's. As the others say, unless you are very experienced it's best to only have one or a pair initially. If you have a pair you'd need a spare cage in case they need separating.
