Default Red Light

I think I have seen that you can leave a red light on in a hamster's room at night to watch them and it won't upset them. Is this right? I don't want to do anything which might mess with Mushu's sleep/waking cycle. If it is ok, can anyone recommend me any specific light?

Yes a red light is fine, but I wouldn't leave it on all night. I usually put it on for a couple of hours before I go to bed

The first time that I read about this was on one of the threads of cypher's hams. I don't know the scientific explanation of why it works, as it was something that she used, that apparently worked, and that I tried and worked, so I didn't give it much thought. Maybe it's because they already have a poor vision, or maybe it's like us with UVB light.

However I've also read (I think that she said that, but I could be wrong), that they don't see very well the red light but they notice that it's not 100% dark, so it could mess with their cycles if you leave the light turned on the whole night.

So if anyone can't corroborate otherwise I would use it to spy on them from time to time but I wouldn't let it turn on as a regular basis the whole night.

I use the ikea ledberg light. it costs 15 euros.

Are they sold for reptiles? And do they need a special holder?

Thanks! Hmm I was hoping to use it so that I could 'spy' on Mushu with a webcam app called Presence. But, I wouldn't want to leave it on all night if it would upset him. Or do it often, either. Perhaps what I really need is a night vision camera!

CMB I don't know if you are asking me. If so:

As far as I now (I'm not an expert at all, I've only been using them for a... month? or so ) Any regular red bulb would work. Some people as SKB use Christmas' lights. Mine is exactly this one LEDBERG Tira iluminación - IKEA

I put it over the lid, but you can place it wherever you want. The package of this one includes a rail and screws to be able to attach it to wood, but I'm not using them, I just placed it over the frame of the lid. I suppose that if you put the light far away they'll notice it less, but you'll see less too.

If cypher joins us I'm sure she will be able to provide better information

I think I've found the scientific explanation. Well, not the explanation but the answer to this problem.

The influence of different light spectra on the suppression of pineal melatonin content in the syrian hamster

Quote:
Red light is the least capable of suppressing pineal melatonin
(Pileal melatonin is one of the things that makes you sleep)

Is the least capable, so "contrario sensu" it still has some effect.

"In the study involving Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus), senior author Prof Randy Nelson from the Ohio State University, first author Dr Tracy Bedrosian of the Salk Institute, and their colleagues, found that blue light had the worst effects on mood-related measures, followed closely by white light. But hamsters exposed to red light at night had significantly less evidence of depressive-like symptoms and changes in the brain linked to depression, compared to those that experienced blue or white light."

It's to do with the rods and cones (light receptors) in the eye. They can hardly perceive red light at all. I just use an ordinary red bulb - cost me 4,95€

You can use any red light, just get a red bulb & put it in a lamp or normal light socket, doesn't have to be LED or anything, you can buy strips sold for reptiles, I do have a WhitePython one but find it too blinding!
I currently have some Phillips Living colour lamps which change colour, go from pure white to any degree of colour you like & dim too which I use as my main lighting anyway.
