Exclamation Urgent: did I do the right thing?

So I woke up at 2:40 a.m. to hear a very loud squeaky-chatter noise. I thought it was just the boys' wheels, but I went over the to cage and the boys were fighting- bad. No claws or teeth but it was very voilent with a lot of loud squeaky-chattering. I layer back down in hopes that it was just a one time thing, but again they did the same major fighting. I thought "ok, if they do this again it's separation time." I don't know who was being the troublemaker, but something tells me it was Key Lime. Tangerine ran back into his burrow whenever Key Lime attacked him. Whenever Tangerine would try to come out of his burrow, Key Lime would just attack him again. I knew I couldn't sleep with this mess going on, so I moved one of the boys into their small travel cage (it's 180 sq. inches ) but I have a bigger bin which I will prepare tomorrow if they need permanent separation. Did I make the right decision, and can the boys ever be re-introduced? I feel a little bit better now that they're not in the same cage but also kind of sad that I had to separate them.

Hello, replied via pm but will reply to this as well. Yes you did the right thing for the safety of your hamsters and for your peace of mind. Well done.

Hamsters do very well living alone (unlike rabbits and guinea pigs). They will soon settle esp. Tangerine who will probably be very relieved!

Yes, I'm sure Tangerine is quite relieved. He is the one who is in the travel cage though and will be moved to a 366 sq inch bin for tomorrow, though I am going to the pet store and I may make a stop to another store to get a bigger bin.

It's kind of a bummer that they had to be separated but I feel much better and I'm sure the boys are relieved as well.

I am so very sorry that you had to go through a terrible fight between your hammies. Fortunately though, there doesn't sound to be any bloodshed. Thankfully, you were able to separate the two of them as quickly as you did while the fight was only in the extremely vocal stage. Although it is heartbreaking that they now have to be separated, I definitely believe that you did the absolute right thing. Now both hammies will be safe from potential harm, and you can relax knowing that there will be no more fighting between them. I am certain that Tangerine thanks you a bunch! Take care and good luck with getting Tangerine settled in the new bin.

Thank you all. I feel like I did the right thing. I think if I hadn't woken up and separated them someone would have most likely ended up with a bite- maybe even a fatal one. My mother is a bit unhappy now that I have to have two cages in my room, but I'm so relieved I don't have to worry about monitoring fights. It was hard to see them fighting so bad but I'm sure Tangerine is happy he doesn't have to put up with his brother.

Yes, you've absolutely done the right thing! I'm so sorry to hear they've fallen out However, hamsters do much better when kept alone so there's no need to worry. They may be confused or skittish for the first week or so, but they'll get used to it eventually. Don't doubt your gut instincts, you were 100% right with this decision. If you have any questions on how to proceed from here, please ask

Ok thanks drago my mother thought I was just being paranoid and worried and I should have left them together, but after describing the situation to her and showing her the messages on here she said I did the right thing. Breathing a sigh of relief now.

I also agree that you did the right thing separating Key Lime and Tangerine - they will be a lot happier being on their own and also it less worrying for you to. I remember when my Russian hybrid girls fell out - it was so sudden and the sounds they were making also woke me up during the night and that we I saw Caramel was getting picked on by Honey - I also found it really hard seeing them fight. My girls did really well living alone they were very happy to have their own cage and didn't have to share toys.

As everyone else has said, you've done the right thing. They'll be fine on their own. I'm glad your Mum was able to support your decision too, it makes things easier when you need to get another cage
