Ventilation in a tank would actually be much better,if the lid was the average mesh type lid. There would be nowhere near as much solid surface with a standard mesh lid(which is ideal)unlike this cage's lid which has a lot more solid surface than ventilation.Mesh lids have practically no solid surface to them at all,so ventilation honestly could never compare.

I don't think I would buy the expensive liners either You'd probably just clean it out in the same way you clean a tank out - it would be easier than I tank I think, because it's deeper and would be lower down, being on the floor on wheels. If you look at Erin's hamsters videos of how she cleans her detolf, it will give some tips. She uses a pan from a dustpan (assume it's one specifically for cleaning out a cage) and scoops it out into a large plastic bag. I do something similar - with two plastic bags - one for the substrate that's being binned and one for the bottom 2/3 (ish) that is to go back in and be mixed in with the new substrate. You would mainly only need to spot clean if your hammy uses a litter tray.

As for the mesh - I guess you could use the panels from the Alaska cage and fix those to the top of the lid! If they fit ok - but it would make the lid heavier.

The cage is fairly heavy but with the wheels its easy to move, the wheels also have breaks on them so it doesn't slide.

They are pretty easy to clean out. Hammylux on youtube just uploaded a video of her cleaning it, I think she has a few videos on the cage.

I did buy the liners but only used them for a couple of months, I don't think the liners are worth it. There hasn't been any damage to the wood at all. One of the hamsters started chewing the liner too.

I know a few people who have not meshed the lids and its been fine for them. Since the cage is quite tall, I doubt a hamster could escape but I meshed it over just for peace of mind.

I have the medium sized cage and it works well my hamsters but if I could get the larger size then I definitely would!

I sometimes think it would be easier, with that cage, just to make a new lid out of mesh with a wood frame. I wouldn't risk 2cm slots with a hammy though!

I love tank style cages. I don't know about this particular cage as I've never had it. However other people had gave you excellent advice.

I would like to add that I would look a little bit more about other possibilities, as this one is very expensive. I found a guy that made me a custom terrarium for 120 euros with front sliding doors and a removable lid on top , so you maybe could find something similar on your area.
