I agree with you both on moving Lola - I suppose it will give her her own space to make her own. It's so confusing whether I'm making the right decision or not. I came back after setting up the spare cage to find them both happily playing on both wheels and swapping over which wheel they are on with no squeaking or anything! I haven't moved them yet as they are getting on fine at the moment but I know there probably will be squabbles and I would hate for something bad to happen while I'm in asleep. It is times like this when i wish I could speak to animals and get their opinion!

I spoke to soon - they just squeaked at each other as Daisy wanted to go on the wheel Lola is on! But now they are spinning fine again! Ahhhhhh it is so confusing lol

It really is confusing, which is why I'd suggest simply eliminating any risk by separating now.Aside from a perfectly normal settling period you'd get with many other situations, there is nothing negative to come from separation. In fact, their quality of life would be even better as single hamsters don't have to be limited in so many ways regarding enrichment and cage size among other things along with being far more appropriate to have hamsters living alone anyways!

I think you've got to assess the situation and make whichever decision you think will best suit your hams. Only you can really know whether they're happy or stressed so I'd just go with your gut. To look at the pros of separation, it eliminates all risk of falling out, your hamsters will be happier and healthier, and it allows them to live a stress free life. Keeping them together on the other hand has quite the opposite effect. In the end, it's a situation where you must do what you think is best. However, just keep all this in mind. Good luck, hope all goes well

Thank you both for your words of encouragement, I have to tell myself that hamsters don't think in the same way that humans do!

In the end, last night I left them together as they seemed fine and at 2am, I was more than ready to go to bed! Throughout the day they have been up a few times and I have heard them squeaking at each other and saw them having a squabble earlier. I decided to separate them this evening to eliminate the risk of them falling out.

The actual separation went quite well. The hams were in separate houses so that made it easier. They were both peering out of their houses watching me move their things about and splitting them between the two cages and to move Lola I just picked her up in the house and put it in her new cage. As I was adding new things into their cages, Lola was just staring at my hand but Daisy started hissing at me (from the bed) every time I put my hand in her cage. Once I was done, Lola came out and exploredand seemed quite happy. Daisy took a little longer too come out but seemed happy once she came out but was looking for Lola for quite a while. I put their cages back on the table and they spent a while pottering around but then both went to their beds and haven't really been up since. I suppose it must be a shock to have you sister taken away from you but I'm sure they are just getting used to not living with each other. Their silence is making me feel guilty but I hope that they will be happier being separate in the long run

Sorry to hear it came to separation, but it's likely the best possible scenario! Poor little ones lol, it'll take some adjusting for them to become used to life without a competitor, but they'll manage. From everyone who has kept pairs, they find at first they feel bad or notice their hams seem confused, but soon report that whichever hamster seemed very docile/nervous soon came out of their shell. So this is something to look forward to at least! You made the right decision so feel good about it. You should share some pictures of the little ones if you ever get the chance

I'm sorry that you had to separate them, but at least that way you all be at ease, knowing that there aren't risks anymore. They sound like they're ok with the change, so everything was for the best

You did the right thing separating them. They'll truly benefit from this and their confidence will grow.

You've done the right thing, they'll be perfectly happy apart. I had to seperate my two Russian dwarfs after 3 weeks and their personalities really started to shine once they couldn't spend time annoying each other lol.
