Meet Emoji!
Hi everyone! I thought I'd introduce you to my new hamster, Emoji! I got him three days ago, and he was labeled a dwarf djungarian hamster, which I've deduced from my research probably means he's a hybrid, yes? I had hamsters as a kid and adored them, but this is my first hamster as an adult, and I'm thrilled!
I made him a big bin cage, and he has plenty of substrate to burrow around in, which seems to be his favorite thing. He seems curious and eager to know more about who I am, though, expectedly, still a bit timid, but I'm eager to learn more about his personality and start taming him.
So happy to have found this forum and its great information, and always happy for any advice!

Re: Meet Emoji!
Emoji has gotten very timid since I moved him to his larger bin cage. I have a lot of substrate in there, and I can hear him burrowing, but he used to come out to see and smell me when I came in the room, and now if he sees me, he runs for his burrow. I am trying to be patient and give him time to adjust. I've only had him 5 days,s o I don't disturb him or anything, I mostly just want to see him at least once a day to make sure he's ok, and he is. Tonight I came in to the room to check on him, and he was drinking at his water bottle (yay! because I wasn't sure if he was using it), but when he saw me, he ran full speed into his house. I hope he warms up to me. I'm not sure how I'll ever tame him if he never comes out, though. At least I know he is enjoying his large home.

Re: Meet Emoji!
5 days is barely any time to a hamster.Aside from that, after any sort of cage change you should let a hamster settle anyways(this doesn't really get mentioned, and leads a lot of owners to believe that nervous behavior in a new environment indicates a large cage being inappropriate which isn't accurate).Just keep going and you'll get there eventually, even if it takes several months or more
