You may have moved him to a larger cage a little too soon, but just give him time to adjust, if he runs away stay by the cage & talk to him for a while.
Make sure he feels safe in the cage, lots of cover & small hideouts he can go into without having to run to his burrow if he feels a bit threatened or exposed, things like cardboard tubes, bendy bridges, coconuts, flower pots & egg boxes with a couple of holes cut out all work really well.
Too much open space can be really scary for them.
If you bin set up is good then he'll gain confidence with time.

Ok, good. I'm just being a nervous mum, I guess. I will add in a few more things to make sure he has enough. Just got a shipment of goodies in for him anyway. I was initially going to wait to move him into a bigger cage, but his first cage was WAY too small, and he was already chewing the bars and climbing them and I wanted him to have as much room as possible as soon as possible. He did seem very happy about the big bin cage when I first moved him, and especially loves his sand bath. I'm looking forward to this weekend and being home all day so I have more time to observe him. He's so cute, it's hard not to get more of a peek at him!

Congrats on Emoji - he looks ever so handsome and I really like his name.

Hamsters so take a like time to adjust to their new home and surroundings all you can be is patience with them until they start to feel comfortable.
Have you tried the tissue trick? Putting clean white unscented tissues up your sleeves for a while so they get your scent on them and then tearing them up and putting them into his cage. He can then collect the tissue to use it in his nest. This help them to get familiar and start to get comfortable with your scent. Best wishes with taming

I hope emoji settles soon. You don't have to be worried right now, these things sometimes need time. Most hams appreciate the extra space with time

Don't worry! Five days isn't much time. Whenever i had to move my robo boys out of their cage to assess where they peed and clean it out, they were scared of me for a whole week and a half and all of my taming progress was unraveled. I began falling into despair when my hamsters would only come out in the dead of night but how they come out earlier and I'm able to tame them. Good luck with taming!

I went into "Emoji's Room" (he's in a spare room that I actually use as my closet, because I don't want the other pets to be able to access him, plus it's a lot quieter, etc.) tonight to check on him, and I see signs of him having at least stepped on his wheel (haven't ever seen him use one yet though), and signs of more burrows and food eaten. I am trying to give him space, but also, of course, want to just check up. Well, he started moving around in his burrow, so I sat down to wait and see if he would come out. After an 45 minutes, he did, but as soon as he saw me, he dove back in to hide. I feel bad that he is so scared! I'm fine giving him space, I just wish I knew how to make him feel more comfortable. I guess he just needs time. I'm just so used to very hands on pets like my dogs and cats, that I feel like I'm neglecting him! It's an adjustment for me as well.

I'm also wishing I knew how old he is. When I got him (from PetCo, the only place around to get hamsters besides PetSmart or a Petland that I refuse to go to because it's so awful), they said they didn't know how old he was. He was in a cage by himself, but I don't know if that necessarily means anything.

Anyway, that's today's Emoji update.

You do have to be patient but it is worth it in the end! It's good to hear he seems to be out & about moving around his cage more even if it is when you're not around mostly, as he's in another room I would make a point of going in & just talking to him fairly frequently so he gets more used to you being around, if he's in a quiet room & you don't go in often enough he won't really have a chance to adjust to you being in the room.

It's often impossible to know the exact age of pet shop hams, unless he'd been in the shop a long time the chances are he'll be a couple of months old.

Emoji has a sister! I didn't expect this to happen, but I was in PetSmart buying cat litter, and saw this sweet Syrian girl. She was up for adoption, because she'd been returned, and she'd been living at the pet store for a month. She seems very tame already, and the store employee said she's been playing with her. They estimate she's about 5 or 6 months old, and she is very sweet. She also seems to love her huge bin cage. I bought 2 bins when I bought Emoji's because I didn't trust myself not to mess up making it, so I had a spare. She seemed very excited with how much more room she had than she was used to in the pet store. And compared to Emoji, she seems so HUGE! I'll start a separate thread for her in the Syrian section, but I wanted to mention it here, too. She's adorable and I'm so glad she doesn't have to live all abandoned in a pet store anymore.

Don't be so hard on yourself, we all make little mistakes, you know to give him time and give him more hidey places so he feels safer.
Congrats on your new girl hammy. Will you be keeping her in the same room as Emoji?

Yes, Beatrix is in the same room as Emoji, though they have plenty of space apart from one another, and can't even see each other, actually.
