New Hamster and Wheel
So I got Piper on Sunday night, and she hasn't at all ran on her flying saucer (that I've seen or heard), which she thinks is a chew toy. (I don't know what she thinks her chew toys are, and I don't want to know ) Anyways, should I do anything about it? Like, put a little peanut butter at the top so she has to climb up it and make it move? Or just let her discover it on her own?

Re: New Hamster and Wheel
At least she thinks it is s chew toy, and not a toilet! Yes, that's what Mushu used his wheel for at first...
It's tricky, since you only just got her, so you don't want to scare her by picking her up if she has not had much handling yet. I think putting some treats on it to tempt her on would be a good idea. Not peanut butter though - too messy and could get all over the flying saucer and her!
At first Mushu wasn't sure what to do with his new larger wheel, but after I popped him onto it he figured it out. So, you want to get Piper on somehow. However, I'd try the treat method first.
Having said that, you have only had her for two days! And you might not want to disturb her cage just yet while she settles in. Given time, I am sure she will figure it out alone.

Re: New Hamster and Wheel
That's what I was also thinking, so on Thursday I'll do this, so she has another day to get used to her cage, and possibly discover its use.

Re: New Hamster and Wheel
Could you get a vertical wheel instead? A lot of hamsters just don't understand how the Flying Saucers work, including my Jasper. She may understand how to use a normal wheel better and they don't take up as much space, meaning more space for enrichment. The other thing with Flying Saucers is they actually don't provide a natural running position for the hamster, meaning their spines can curve.
Personally, I wouldn't put peanut butter on the wheel as it is quite sticky and could get stuck in the fur or pouches. I would let her discover the wheel on her own or just by putting regular treats like seeds up there.

Re: New Hamster and Wheel
I'd agree with chesca, an upright wheel would be much better but in the meantime just let her sort things out for herself, I wouldn't put peanut butter on anything! If you want to try something like that to encourage her just some of her food would do.

Re: New Hamster and Wheel
When I got up this morning to go to school I witnessed Piper running on her flying saucer! Yay! I will probably get an upright wheel for the up level of her DIY once it is finished.
