You could buy the smallest size first time just to check that you like it. That one is 1kg and not as good value for money as the larger sizes however.

Re: Where to start?
I have a 20kg bag since Nov time I only do a spot clean everyday.. I do a big clean once every few months like 3 as my hamster is potty trained and likes things neat she a bit weird so I still have over half the bag left as I use quite a lot each time for nice deep substrate! It really good stuff and each to clean up mine loves it!

I have been having a browse over the forums and its interesting to see whats changed, that's why I wanted to get some suggestions before buying. I'm planning on getting a Syrian, I've only owned Syrians in the past.
Is there any specific cages you would recommend?
I am in the UK so I will definitely get hold of fitch bedding. Do you know if they sell it at pets at home? If not, I'll find it online for sure.
Wheel wise, I would need something quiet as possible so it being called 'silent runner' is a good start
Thank you for all you help!

Oh nice, another Syrian lover! I currently only own one hamster, Duncan. He's a Syrian as well (I've also only owned Syrians but am looking into a chinesey).
Cages like the Alaska and Barney are highly praised cages for Syrians. I've never used either of them, but there are many members on here who have and loved them!
Like others have said, you unfortunately can't get it at pets at home. However, Fitch has a website https://www.fitchrecycling.co.uk/fit...r/bedding.html
A silent runner is definitely the quietest wheel I've ever heard! (Or technically not heard!) so if that's what you're looking for, it's the perfect wheel for you.
If you have any other questions, please ask

Re: Where to start?
Does anyone have any suggestions for cages?
I went to pets at home today and had a quick look round, saw the most adorable little hammy. Wanted to take her home then and there!

Re: Where to start?
Pets At Home have a Slavic Ruffy (rat) cage. The low one is best to prevent falls/injury. It comes with a rat tube. It has narrow bar spacing so could be used for a Syrian or dwarf hamster.

There are other rat cages available, but they are a bit too tall.
Zoo plus website is probably better as they have the Alaska, Barney and Alexander cage. Which are better value for money.

What type of hamster is Pip? I'm planning on getting a syrian.

Millie,
Pip is a Golden Banded Syrian.
I would happily recommend the Alaska cage, but if you have some large fish tanks that would be ok you will have a heck of a good starting point..
As for substrate I use wood shavings for Pip I tried her with Fitch, but the dust from it made her sneeze a lot, so would not risk the chance of a respiratory problem occurring.
This is Pip.....AKA Pippin..

Re: Where to start?
Hi Millie and welcome back!
I think that everybody give you good advice.
If you're thinking of getting a syrian a 20 to 28 cm wheel would be best. I have the trixie wheel and works fine, my hamster it's in my room and I don't have problems sleeping.
I would order fitch if I could, however It's not available where I live so I use fitch and I'm happy with it.
Syrians usually aren't fans of sand, but if you can provide yours a little bit of sand it's a good way of enrinchment. You can also use the rest to potty train him. It's very useful.
Probably the most affordable cage that fulfils the recommended minimums are the Alaska (sold at zooplus). I recommend to take a look at the german site because in my case it's cheaper than the spanish site, but I don't know if it happens in other countries. There are another nice cages in that page as the barney and the alexander. You have tank cages too but they are more pricey.
If you have any specific questions just ask us !

Oh lovely! I would love to see a photo of him!
At the moment I'm leaning towards the Alaska.. not only is it cheaper but I think it would fit better in the area I had in mind! What cage do you use?
Yes I checked the website out, I definitely think I'll be ordering some Fitch! As well as the silent runner too.
Thank you for being so welcoming and helpful

Oh my! What a gorgeous picture, Pippin looks lovely
Thank you for your help, I think I'm going to go with the Alaska, especially as it's not as expensive as I was expecting it to be!
That's interesting to know about the Fitch, I was planning on ordering a sample size and I guess I'll have to see how I get on with it once I get my hamster..

Re: Where to start?
That would be the first time I'd ever heard about Fitch having any sort of dust,so I'd say it was merely a bad batch. It's an extremely good substrate though, and nobody else that I'm aware of has ever had that same issue.
