Question Making a boarder aware of a care issue

Right so this probably sounds very silly, but I will explain the whole situation.

Basically, as I'm sure some of you are aware, I have two wonderful guinea pigs, Pemba and Oreo. We have found a wonderful local boarding place, who specialises with guinea pigs, but will take on other small animals (hamsters etc). Anyway, we are going to visit the place this weekend and there's a few things on the website regarding hamster care that concerned me. The website mentions that all hamsters are cleaned out regularly, which, I'm sure most of you know, severely stresses hamsters out and also is unnecessary. I want to correct them, to prevent more hamsters becoming stressed out by this, but I'm not really sure the best way to go about it. I am probably quite a lot younger than the owner of the boarding place, which means I'm not always taken seriously. How can I correct them while being respectful?

The other thing that concerned me is that they charge extra for cages the size of the Hamster Heaven because it could encourage owners to bring a smaller cage to save money, making the hamster less comfortable and calm. How could I go about correcting this?

I'm not trying to bash this place because they seem excellent with their guinea pig care, but not so up to date with hamster care. I am posting this here rather than a guinea pig forum because this is more of a hamster issue.

Thank you

You're definitely in quite a predicament! I think convincing may be a bit easier than you'd think, especially if they care for their guinea pigs properly. If it were me, I would try emailing them regarding the matter, this is better than in person as most people don't tend to take children (or most juveniles for that matter) seriously. The anonymity of an email can give you the benefit of at least getting them to hear you out! I would politely explain why cleaning hamster's out too often does not provide any benefits at all, but rather makes them more stressed since their scent has been removed. You can then explain that stress (just as in guinea pigs) can lead to illnesses. As for the cage thing, there are lots of wonderful studies that have been conducted which prove that hamsters, even more than most other rodents, need huge cages in order to be healthy both physically and psychologically. I would talk to them about how a larger cage generally=less stress which means less illness and other issues. You could also link them to up to date care guides, studies, and even this forum if they need extra resources! Good luck with this, please let us know how it goes
