Post Wheels??

My hamster LOVES running on his wheel, I think the wheel is big enough and safe ( I think it's a 12" one, 'Savic' brand- it came with his cage) (he's a Syrian hamster) but it makes such a racket. Half the time I think he's in pain and he's the one that's squeaking not the wheel I imagine it hurts his little ears too.... Do you know how to make the wheel quieter, or brands that do quiet or silent wheels. I imagine you can't oil the wheel, or can you use hamster-safe oil?
Thanks x

You can oil the wheel down with vegetable oil as it's perfectly safe and really does work
Another solution, though a bit less practical, is to get a new and higher quality wheel. Something like the silent runner or the wodent wheel are both good choices if you're looking into getting a whole new one. Though oiling will work, it's only a quick fix, and will eventually wear off unfortunately.

It is highly unlikely that your cage came with a 12 inch wheel because I am yet to see a cage include such a large wheel. It is probably an 8 inch wheel if it is a Savic wheel. You can try measuring the diameter. If your hamster is still young, he will be ok with an 8 inch, but a wheel upgrade will be necessary. Drago has linked two excellent wheels, which would be perfect. For the moment, vegetable or olive oil should work for silencing the wheel somewhat.

Thanks chesca_27 it might be a 8" I'm not sure... His back doesn't seem too bent, however it is not quite straight.. He's nearly a year old.....

If it isn't completely straight you need a bigger wheel.I'd definitely go with the Silent Runner, being the superior wheel that is very long lasting and stays silent plus is the safest on the market

I agree with Amity. They need to have a straight back when running on their wheels otherwise it can cause spinal deformities and other health problems. I really would urge you to get a Silent Runner or alternative.

Whenever I clean the cages I put a smidgen of olive oil on the wheel spindle... it works fine. Some tried to sniff around the spindle, but normally it is ignored...

Coconut oil could be used to prevent squeeking on the wheels, it's perfectly natural and won't do hamster any harm if he licks it too
