Question Does your hamster do this?

My hamster (called Hazel) seems to push some of her bedding out of her cage through the bars. She seems to do this overnight and when I wake up in the morning, some of her bedding is on the floor next to her cage.

Just wondering if this was normal for new hamsters settling into their new home as I only got her recently.

Thanks.

This is completely normal behavior, even for hamsters who are fully settled! Hamsters are natural burrowers and unfortunately barred cages don't leave room for copious amounts of bedding, nor do they hold it in very well. When a hamster digs about, it's not unusual for bits of bedding to fall out. If you want to stop this from happening, placing a strip of cardboard around the base of the cage can help

Perfectly normal! Harvey's over a year old and he still does it. He loves to dig and then crawl under.

Yep, mine also does it.Now he lives in a tank and that's not a problem, but when he was in a barred cage I had to clean his messes almost every mornings

Entirely normal - it's a byproduct of the natural burrowing behaviour, rather than an aim in itself!

You can reduce the level of bedding that gets thrown out of the cage by Drago's suggestion, but changing the bedding to Fitch (which doesn't readily get knocked through the bars) can also help.
