Default Have I forgotten anything?

So far this is what I have bought for our impending baby Syrian hammie. Is there anything else essential which I may have forgotten? I need to find something for the sand to go in (some kind of bowl or tray) and order a wheel still.

Nice big cage
Megazorb substrate
Toilet tissue to tear in to bedding (job for my 2 kids to do )
Food bowl
Harry Hamster Food – same as breeder uses
Tiny friends farm Chinchilla Sand
2 bendy bridges
2 cardboard tubes
Wooden house (which I bet he ignores )
Water bottle
Chew/treats
Aladino carry cage (Medium)

Soooooo excited!!!
Ahem, I mean ... the kids are so excited. Their pet obviously .... *whistles* ....nothing to do with me.

Whimzee chew (sold for dogs, but hamsters like them and often ignore hamster chews)

A bowl/litter tray/hamster toilet. Syrians often use one corner in the cage to pee. Having a container to pee in makes cleaning out the pee area easier. You can put the container in and hope the hamster uses it or wait until they choose a corner and put the container in that corner and put isome substrate with pee on in the container to encourage them to keep using it. They go to the pee smell to go pee again.

Levels/platforms on legs or ones which attach to cage bars may be enjoyed.

I buy the oven proof dishes from Wilkos as potties. They last ages and are a good size too - Wilko Utility Rectangular Roaster 22cm at wilko.com

Do I need one as a sand bath and one as a potty? - so two areas?

No just one. Syrians don't really sand bath. They usually have a little dig in the fresh sand then use it as a potty.

Super excited for you! I've heard that it's good for hammies - particularly younger ones - to have extra animal protein. I give my ham 1tsp of dried meal worms a day She's loves them

Your list looks good! You might find you need a few more things to fill the big cage. I think rat sputniks are good - they give a bit of overhead cover - something to sit under, and ours was popular if we put bedding in it. Hanging one next to a shelf is good, so they can get in and out easily. They do tend to jump out the other side so making sure there is nothing hard underneath to land on is a good idea. I used to have it hung near the front or back, so one hole was close to the bars, another next to or over a shelf and the third hole is the one that gets jumped out of It's quite a big thing so will help the cage feel less empty.

Rat rations sell them slightly cheaper and you can choose your own top and bottom colours

Sputnik - XL - £4.99 : ratRations.com

Here's a photo of one in our late Syrian, Charlie's, first cage. I tied a rat tube to the roof so he could also run between his house roof and the sputnik (partly to stop him jumping out as the cage was a bit cluttered lol).

And here's a photo of him in it

He wasn't that interested in it until it was easy to get into (in his next cage it was next to a shelf) and until I put some paper bedding in it, and then he'd often be found napping in it.

I'd also say a litter tray is good - really saves on the need to clean too often. I use this one - it fits in a corner and is big enough to pee in the back and sit in the front for a wash.

But I also like the look of Souffle's! And ceramic can't be chewed like plastic. The one I had fitted inside a large house quite well though. We got our hammy a bigger house and he moved his pee corner inside it.

Hi jopop. Have you got your new hamster yet? Sounds as though you prepared really well.

Not yet but won't be too long - couple more weeks. We are away on hols this week and have a lot on when we get back so I've had to get sorted in advance really. Ordered a Silent Runner last night so now every single thing we need is in place I think.
