Mushu sounds a lovely little ball of fluff I hope you have lots of fun with your furry little friend! Humphrey wasn't sharing a cage with anyone else, and he was the only awake hamster, he was running around and jumping up and down in a "pick me!" Sort of way, while the other hamsters where still sleeping in their little huts!

So many of my friends’ hamsters have been nippy little things too. None of mine ever bit, though. And after only a week of owning him, Mushu is so friendly that he fell asleep in my hands this morning. So, I think a combination of getting the right hamster and handling it respwctfully can do wonders.

Re: Is he long haired
I've gotten all my hamsters from my local pet shop and have been for over 16 years. I've never had any problems.
Every hamsters personality is different.

Re: Is he long haired
Bambi(my female Syrian)has been essentially tame since I got her.She has been nippy like any other hamster is prone to being(even from breeders)but other than that is a relatively friendly hamster. She came from a chain pet store
As long as you know what you're getting yourself into there is nothing wrong with a pet store hamster. With Russians and anything else they're labelled as in a pet store(or those from rescues as well or otherwise with no pedigree)you need to take precautions in terms of diet, but I wouldn't consider it the kind of thing to completely rule out pet store hamsters. There are benefits and drawbacks to any situation, but if the animal in question is given adequate care and is loved that is more important than where they come from

Exactly Lizzy and Amity. Nature, not nurture! I firmly believe that most hamsters, if treated right have the potential to reciprocate that live with their trust.

Mushu must really trust you and love you to fall asleep in your hands!!
Humphrey won't fall asleep in my hands, he thinks there are more exciting things in the world (like treats and escaping and having a run round on the floor and making us catch him- luckily he usually comes to you if you sit still, hold out a treat and call his name) than falling asleep.... Humphrey is really tame and friendly though, he tries his best to make sure he doesn't have to resort to biting (i think I've already mentioned that he pushes your hand away with his little paws!).
I agree that with the right treatment and respect, almost any animal can make a great pet!
I've heard that male hamsters are more laid-back and less bitey than the females!

Re: Is he long haired
To be honest Humphrey, I was surprised too! I have never had a hamster do that before. Sit on my hands, sure. Sleep? No. I actually worried that he was sick at the time because he is usually so active. Although he is doing well, he remains skittish and the taming process is by no means over. Hmm I have heard that about the genders too, but I cannot comment as I have only ever had boys (for no particular reason). I think it probably comes down to the individual hamster, just like with humans.
