They do, but I’d be concerned that Mushu senior might die giving birth

Re: Is he long haired
If it eases your mind, at his age sex him should be easy. If you can't handle him to see it directly, try to lure him into a glass container (so you can take a peek from the bottom). You have to take a look at the bottom of the lower part of his body, If you can't see anything he's probably a she, if you can see tiny (or not so tiny) lumps that will be his testicles and that will mean that he is really a he. In the testicles area usually are less hairs and the size of the testicles can reach a bean size.
I think it's not common that moms die giving birth, but unexperienced breeders can suffer the loss of the pups (by the mum culling them, or for other reasons)

Thanks for the tip! I will definitely try to check soon, depending on how calm he is about being handled. Still letting him settle in for now and the little furball is faaast asleep.

Aww Congratulations on Mushu your gorgeous fluffy long haired ham!
I agree with Amityville about it not mattering where he comes from. It sounds like you've fallen in love with him, not at all surprised as he's special.

Aww thank you. All hammies are special of course but he does make my heart melt. I can't wait to touch him... But I have to. So, I am watching him sleep instead like a creep

Re: Is he long haired
What a lovely fluffy hamster Mushu is (love the name). I would advise you to put a lot of deep substrate into the cage so that he can burrow down and make a cosy bed. My lot all have bottomless wooden houses on top of a huuuuge pile of fitch.
They make food stores and nests and seem to like the cosiness.

Oh gosh I put lots and lots of shredded paper bedding in one corner for him to make a bed out of, but he has moved it out of the way and is pointedly sleeping on the shavings instead! He had done the same in the pet store - maybe his fluff is enough of a bed for him lol

Re: Is he long haired
The shredded paper bedding might not be soft enough. I use toilet tissue unscented, it's soft and very cosy for hams.
