Question Cage Climbing

Hello!

I recently got a Syrian hamster (his name is Harold), and I have noticed that he often climbs the side of his cage right to the top, or he tried to stand on top of his house and get to the top from there. I am just wondering if this is normal for hamsters to climb their cages, and also how small of a space can they crawl through? The bars on my cage are spaced 1/2" and I can see him poke his nose through and I just do not want him to try and squeeze out.

Any suggestions or feedback I would really appreciate!

Hi~

When I got my syrian, Hamilton, he often tried to get out. What is Harold living in (the cage)? if it is too small, it can cause these behaviors. Remember as well, hamsters like floortime and outside of the cage time too

Climbing the cage bars and searching for ways out is a normal behavior in most hamsters. Syrian bar spacing should be 1/2 of an inch max as anything larger and they'll walk right out! Can you attach a picture of your setup so we can help suggest some more stimulating things to add so as to discourage his behavior? Best wishes

Total normal behaviour, it's what they like to do, also when they do that they're ensuring their scent is left, they like to make the cage theirs and that means rubbing and climbing all over the cage. It helps them adjust and settle.
