Re: RSPCA Adoptions
Sorry, I probably phrased it badly - I'm guessing the RSPCA has less hamsters because there are now other ways for people to rehome them. Before, it may have been the only place for people to go but with small animal rescues, support pets 4 adoption in p@h and the amount of hamsters that come up on gumtree etc people don't need to go to RSPCA. I'm down spun but we don't have a centre near us for people to go to so all those other ways would be easier for people. Presumably the same is true in your area.

Re: RSPCA Adoptions
I guess that could be it - or the RSPCA are passing them on to other rescues. Thanks Velma.

Re: RSPCA Adoptions
If you put a search in the RSPCA rehoming for hamsters of all species, it comes up with a total of 17 hamsters in the whole country, with only 1 in the north of England. It just seems to me there used to be a lot more. So either they are sending them to other rescues, or - I hate to think they are just not rehoming some. It used to be that there were loads rescued.

Re: RSPCA Adoptions
Small Pets Matter isn't being updated - I know a rescue that no longer exists that isn't having success in being removed. Just be aware of this if contacting one of the rescues on the list.

Re: RSPCA Adoptions
Theres almost never any hamsters for adoption in my area.. and there are no local breeders that pedigree their hamsters, so it only leaves me with the option of the pet stores I just want to give a hammy a second chance at an awesome life.. why must this be so hard!!!

Re: RSPCA Adoptions
I agree - a lot of ads on Gumtree are out of date. There are a couple of pet rescues not too far from me but I just can't understand why the RSPCA doesn't have Hamsters in most of the country now. I mean it's good if there aren't any to rescue lol, but the usual case is there are loads.

Re: RSPCA Adoptions
I did write to them and said I noticed there were hardly any hamsters for adoption any more and why was this and did they send them to other animal rescues and if so could they give me a list of the rescues they use.
I had a reply saying basically due to limited charitable resources they only take in animals most in need, which are those rescued from cruelty and neglect and therefore it is less likely to find hamsters in their centres unless rescued by inspectors.
So basically - they don't have space for hamsters by the sound of it. This still doesn't say what happens to all the hamsters who have been abandoned, given up and so on.

Re: RSPCA Adoptions
I hope that there is less abandoned hamsters as I don't like to think of the alternative. Camp Nibble is one I came across when looking in the P@H magazine one month. It's in Leeds so I don't really know if that is close to you anyway. They have a couple of dwarfs whe were abandoned next to a bin! From their 2016 rehoming page it looks like they have managed to rehome a good few hams.

Re: RSPCA Adoptions
Leeds is a bit of a way from me but not that far. There is also Austin's Hamster Haven in Doncaster (similar distance - an hour or so on the train) - it looks great - they have a Facebook page. I found a lovely one in Cheshire (that had the pair of Robos) but it's about 3 or 4 hours away. (Also called Hamster Haven!) Both have quite a few hamsters. There is small private rescue about 45 minutes from me. But I'm a bit cautious about believing things on Gumtree - ie whether some may be unofficial breeders. The time needs to be right for me. I looked recently and decided to wait a bit, especially as the idea had been for a pair of Robos and that wasn't easy to find.
Anyway it does suggest that other pet rescues are now really important for unwanted or abandoned hamsters if the RSPCA has limited space - I expect most of the ones they take in from neglect and cruelty will be larger animals.
