Smile Good Hamster Products?

Hi everyone
I'm getting a new hamster soon, i haven't had one in a very long time and I think I've lost most of my old hamster products. I was wondering if anyone could recommend me some? Oh and also, which type of wheel should I get for a Syrian hamster?

What species are you getting?
Minimum cage size is 450 Sq inches now in the US
Depends where you live as far as what's available to you

Congrats on your new hamster
Post lots of pics

There's a really good thread on people's hamster's favourite products here Top 5 buys?

I also made a post about the basics that people often get wrong - cage, bedding, food and wheel http://www.hamstercentral.com/commun...462-post7.html Go for the largest cage (floorspace) that you can - a minimum of 350 square inches. This may be a bought cage (e.g. the Zooplus cages I recommended on that post) or a homemade cage - in the US, storebought cage options are more limited, so many make their own bin cage or convert a fish tank / Ikea Detolf.

With a wheel - you should go for one that is 12" diameter, as a wheel that is too small (causes them to bend their spine / neck to run) will cause spinal problems. Karlie Wonderland, Trixie and Silent Runner are popular options.

What country are you in? That affects what products are open to you!

Hi

Inky Pen has linked some good threads which are worth a read.

To answer your wheel question, most people use a 12 inch Silent Runner wheel. They can be pricey and difficult to get hold of, but they are very high quality. I am yet to hear a negative comment about them.

Cages will depend on where you live in the world. US owners tend to be left to DIY cages, bin cages or glass tanks. A popular one is the Ikea Detolf, which is a large glass carbinet tipped on its side. You will need to build a lid, but that is minimal DIY skill. In the UK, big commercial cages can be purchased from Zooplus. The Hamster Heaven, Barney, Alaska and Alexander cages are all excellent and big enough, which can accommodate any budget.

As the others say, some depends on what country you're in. But the basics are a good cage or tank or bin cage. A syrian sized wheel (10 to 12 inches usually - some depends on the size of the Syrian, some depends on what wheel you like ) Most have an 11" wheel at least, but even if you don't need a 12" wheel, the Silent Runner is a lovely wheel, safe and sturdy and silent. Wodent wheels are fine too - hard to get hold of in the Uk. The trixie wheel is a popular option in the Uk too - it's one of the cheapest - most people find them quite quiet but I think they can get noisier with age.

I think a good sized house is important for a Syrian - big enough that they can build a big nest in and to be dark inside at one end - I used to put a bendy bridge over the door as a tunnel entrance which makes it dark inside. Rat sized toys and tubes are best for Syrians as most things sold for hamsters are only big enough for dwarf hamsters. Bendy bridges, any kind of hidey places, rat sputniks that hang from the roof, cork logs - all good toys. And there are lots of tutorials on making toys out of toilet roll tubes and other things.

There's a whole variety of substrates available which can be bought in bulk cheaply. Fitch is a favourite in the Uk (recycled food grade paper).
